An acute hospital in downtown Memphis, University Hospital is a teaching facility budgeted for average daily census of 382 patients. The patient population includes multi-system failure, resulting in complex and lengthy OR cases.
Reporting to the Administrative Director of Perioperative Services, the Clinical Director, Operating Room is responsible for daily operational leadership of the 19-suite Operating Room. This includes overseeing the quality of care; ensuring that care meets regulatory standards; timely individualized service to the surgeons; and sharing expertise with the staff. The Clinical Director works in collaboration with the Administrative Director to plan staffing and on troubleshooting potential barriers to providing efficient and effective service. In partnership with the Perioperative leadership team, the Clinical Director maintains 24-hour responsibility to address issues.
The patient population includes all ages of adults, adolescents through seniors. All surgical sub-specialty services are provided, except for OB: Cardiovascular, Transplant, Neurosurgery, Orthopedic, General, Urology, Gynecology, EENT, Ophthalmology, Plastic, Endoscopic, etc. Kidney, Pancreas and Liver are top 15% in the country based on volume. The Operating Room department structure includes two Clinical Directors, with responsibility for approximately 200 FTEs, including Registered Nurses, Operating Room Technicians and Attendants, who transport cases to and from OR. Additionally, there are Patient Care Coordinators for specialty surgical teams; Managers of SPD, Logistics, Business Office; Manager of Secretaries, Attendants and oversight of work environment; and three Educators for all of Perioperative Services (one dedicated to OR). The Operating Room utilizes a shared governance council to facilitate a collaborative approach to ensure excellence in patient care standards.
Ideal candidates for this Clinical Director position will have at least 8 years of experience in the operating room as a circulator, as well as a minimum of 5 years of experience as a manager or director for the operating room. The Clinical Director must have excellent communication skills and problem solving skills. A participative leadership style is needed, facilitating change and maintaining a positive work environment. Also important is ability to share knowledge and experience with a diverse mix of employees, medical staff and other departments. The Clinical Director will be a visionary with the desire to mentor, develop and lead staff to greater successes. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing is preferred. CNOR is preferred.
