Kaiser Permanente is an AA/EEO employer. DEPARTMENT: Trauma SCHEDULE: Full – Time Regular; 40 hours per week; Day Shift; Monday through Friday. EDUCATION: Clinical Master’s in Nursing in area of specialization required. BSN required. Graduate of accredited school of nursing. LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: Current California RN license required. Current CPR certificate required. California Clinical Nurse Specialist Certification in area of specialty required. ACLS or PALS Certification preferred. TNCC Provider (current) TNCC Instructor (Current) preferred JOB SUMMARY: Provides in-depth clinical expertise in a defined area of nursing practice (eg., pediatrics, oncology, adult medicine). Develops and ensures quality standards for nursing practice for a specific patient population. Provides advanced clinical practice education, consultation, research and administration. QUALIFICATIONS: Three years recent experience in area of specialty required. Demonstrated clinical expertise in area of specialty required. Demonstrated effective human relation skills required. Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills required. Current ACLS preferred. TNCC Provider (current) TNCC Instructor (Current) preferred DUTIES: Establishes and monitors care standards and makes recommendations for changes in area of clinical practice. Collaborates with nursing staff in assessing patient, family age-specific nursing needs and develops plan of care for complex high-risk patients. Evaluates the effectiveness of the care provided. Designs teaching programs for patients/families and provides assistance to nursing staff in program implementation. Develops interdisciplinary plans of care for complex and high risk patients. In conjunction with members of the health care team, assesses staff knowledge and identifies competency-based education needs of staff and members. Designs and implements education programs to ensure the quality of staff knowledge and skills. Introduces new techniques/innovation based on advanced practice trends. May serve as a preceptor to graduate healthcare students. Provides consultation to physicians, nurses and other heath care providers in meeting care needs of individual or groups of patients in both outpatient and inpatient settings. Makes recommendations to change standards of care or standards of practice based on own research or the research of others. Defines and implements best nursing practices. Assists in interviewing staff and provides input into evaluations regarding clinical competence and provides coaching and counseling. Participates and consults in setting the direction for QA&I monitoring, establishing standards and evaluating outcomes. Collects and analyzes data regarding patient care outcomes, trends, morbidity and mortality.Consistently supports compliance and the Principles of Responsibility (Kaiser Permanente’s Code of Conduct) by maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of information, protecting the assets of the organization, acting with ethics and integrity, reporting non-compliance, and adhering to applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations, accreditation and licenser requirements (if applicable), and Kaiser Permanente’s policies and procedures. Such changes are generally implemented only after notice is given to affected employees.Other Duties: Establishes and monitors trauma patient care standards and makes recommendations for changes in clinical practice. Serves as a role model for Trauma Nursing Practice. Collaborates with the nursing staff in assessing patient, family, and age-specific nursing needs. Assists in family participation in that plan. Supports patient self-management. Evaluates the effectiveness of the care provided with appropriate data analysis and ensures that data is timely, accurate and complete. Designs teaching programs for patients/families and provides assistance to nursing staff in program implementation. Maintains/updates patient education materials for inpatient and outpatient with annual review. Provides education for patients and families in the theory and skills necessary to manage their disease(s).In conjunction with members of the Trauma Team, assesses staff knowledge and identifies competency-based education needs of staff members. Also design and implements education programs to insure the quality of staff knowledge and skills. Provides an ongoing program to recruit and retain Trauma Nurses, conducts Recruitment Neuro workshops. Provide current regional Trauma Critical Care workshops. Develops identified Trauma nurse performers to become clinical experts, clearly defining required knowledge of clinical, regulatory and document standards at the bedside. Maintain the Trauma Nursing Career Pathway document and review annually. Competency will be assessed when new techniques or responsibilities are introduced annually. Develops, and maintains a formal Clinical Mentorship Program for Trauma Nurses. Develops implements and evaluates a Trauma Nursing Orientation and Trauma Nursing Competency Documents that are reviewed annually. Orientation provides information and necessary training appropriate to program responsibilities. Provides consultation to physicians, nurses and other health care providers in meeting care needs of individual or groups of patients in both outpatient and inpatient settings. Makes recommendations to revise standards of care or standards of practice based on research. Defines and implements best nursing practices. Provides written input to the manager for Staff Nurse Evaluation addressing clinical competence for the purpose of coaching and counseling. Assists in developing the Trauma Center Quality Plan. Collects, analyzes data regarding patient care provision, outcomes, trends, morbidity and mortality. Recommends performance improvements as a result of analysis of metrics. Collects and analyze data regarding patient care outcomes, trends, morbidity and mortality. Supports the Trauma Center by committee and meeting participation. This includes the Performance Improvement and Patient Safety Committee (PIPS) Unit Multidisciplinary Care Rounds and participate in development and participation on presenting trauma policies and procedures.
