Communication Technician (Dispatcher)
Job Description
Boston MedFlight provides transport services to the most critically ill and injured patients in the area. We are a non-profit organization that transports patients from scenes of accidents and community hospitals to the 6 teaching hospitals in Boston via helicopter, jet and ambulance. We were developed over 22 years ago and since that time have transported over 33,000 patients.
We have exciting opportunities for people who want to be at the helm. We are looking for full-time Communication Technicians to coordinate all aspects of air and ground patient transport.
The Communication Technician is the first line of response for all inquiries for emergency critical care transport. The ideal candidate will be an organized, service minded, detail-oriented, team player who can multi-task in a fast paced setting. The Communication Technician at Boston MedFlight is responsible for coordinating and facilitating all requests for patient transport by helicopter, jet and ground. The ideal candidate will serve as the primary communication link between medical teams, referring and receiving hospitals/agencies, pilots and physicians throughout the transport of a patient. Boston MedFlight relies on the Communication Technicians to maintain positive interactions with fellow employees, hospital and agency staff, and the general public. Communication Technicians are responsible for operation of all radios and computerized dispatch programs, as well as for monitoring weather, flight following and other communication equipment associated with MedFlight transports. Individuals in this position will be responsible for adhering to and implementing organizational procedures, as well as upholding safety standards as set forth by MedFlight, the FAA and contracted aviation vendors.
This is not the run of the mill ambulance dispatch position. This is not just answering phones and sending out an ambulance. This is decision–making, autonomy and facilitating. This is communicating with first responders and doctors, pilots and medical crew. This is arranging the most appropriate service for our diverse patient population. This is flight following and radio communication. This is high profile and very rewarding!
Requirements:
Applicants must be EMT certified (Mass or National Registry) and have BLS certification. The right candidate will possess excellent telephone communication skills, basic computer skills, great customer service skills and understanding of radio communications. Ideal person will have the ability to work independently as well as interdependently. This position requires someone who is calm under pressure but who can do several things at once, someone who can see the big picture as well as manage the little details. Previous dispatch experience required, preferably in busy systems. Knowledge of Computer Aided Dispatch systems and Microsoft Office applications preferred. Ability to work rotating 12-hour shifts, including day, night, and weekend shifts. Full-time schedule consists of 3-4 shifts each week, including built-in overtime.
