Continuous LPN II/LPTN II

CLASS SUMMARY
The Licensed Practical Nurse II/Licensed Psychiatric Technician Nurse II works
under general supervision and is responsible for providing direct nursing care
to patients in private homes, hospitals, clinics, and residential
institutions.  This position is governed by state and federal laws and
agency/institution policy.


EXAMPLES OF WORK

1. Monitors patient's condition by checking vital signs, measuring food and
liquid intake and output, responding to call lights or patients' requests
for assistance, and making rounds to observe patients.

2. Administers injections and oral medications as directed by physician.

3. Provides direct care to patients including caring for colostomies and
tracheotomies, mixing medications and food and inserting feeding tubes,
catheterizing patients, and performing other nursing procedures.

4. Documents medications and treatments administered, changes in patient's
condition or behavior, response to care, and daily activities.

5. Teaches patients and/or their families how to care for their medical
needs including catheter and colostomy care, bowel program techniques,
insulin injection, personal hygiene, and skin care.

6. Assists doctor in clinic by gathering information on patient's needs and
informing doctor, dressing and undressing patients, assisting with
medical procedures, and transcribing doctor's orders.

7. Counts controlled drugs to verify the amount of narcotics and reviews
patients medication cards for changes and dosage amounts.  Sets up,
administers, and charts patient medications.

8. Notifies next shift of each day's events including patient progress,
behavioral problems, and new orders.

9. May instruct and assist patients with personal hygiene and feeding
procedures and escort patients to dining and recreational area and
appointments.

10.  Performs related responsibilities as required or assigned.


WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

The Licensed Practical Nurse II/Licensed Psychiatric Technician Nurse II has
regular contact with patients, their families, physicians, nurses, and the
public.


SPECIAL JOB DIMENSIONS

Frequent exposure to various diseases and infectious organisms and occasional
exposure to violent and physically aggressive patients creates an element of
danger.  Occasional heavy lifting is required.  Occasional to frequent shift
work may be required.


KNOWLEDGES, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS

Knowledge of nursing theory and practices.
Ability to provide direct nursing care.
Ability to observe and evaluate patient's condition.
Ability to instruct patients in routine medical care.
Ability to perform various nursing procedures.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Licensure by the Arkansas State Nursing Board as a Licensed Practical Nurse;
plus one year of experience providing direct nursing care.


OR


Licensure by the Arkansas State Nursing Board as a Licensed Psychiatric
Technician Nurse; plus one year of experience providing direct nursing care.

Other job related education and/or experience may be substituted for the
experience requirements upon approval of the Qualifications Review Committee
