Director Rating

This position has overall responsibility for the activities of the Rating Department.  Other responsibilities include meeting all departmental and corporate goals as determined or delegated by the Actuarial Services Leadership Team, interaction with company sales and marketing leadership, sales representatives, customer accounts, brokers and consultants regarding premium rates and Rating guidelines as required.

 

Essential Responsibilities/Accountabilities

 

Direct all activities and provide supervision for Rating staff.  Translate corporate and departmental goals into quantifiable objectives to provide motivation to staff.

 

Coordinate with Vice President and all other applicable departments to identify and resolve problems and concerns.  Coordinate Rating requirements with all other operating departments

 

Hire, train and develop staff.  Ensure that all employees maintain an appropriate level of technical expertise; receive training on a periodic basis; have current and accurate job descriptions; and are apprised of their performance on a regular basis.

 

Consult and coordinate with Sales Department for rate renewals and proposals.  Make recommendations to groups for appropriate risk arrangements that will be beneficial to both the group and the corporation.  Actively participate in Sales presentations to groups and negotiation of rates including interface with consultants, brokers and other external persons as necessary.

 

Review renewals, settlements and proposals for all key accounts.

 

Participate in the establishment of health cost and utilization trends as well as other renewal and new business quote factors in conjunction with Pricing.

 

Monitor processes and procedures to ensure consistency and quality.

 

Make and implement Rating policy recommendations.

 

Formally review staff on an annual basis and prepare salary adjustments.  Informally review staff on a continuous basis, providing feedback to ensure positive staff development.  Make recommendations for promotions within the department

 

Minimum Qualifications 

 BS in Math, Economics, Actuarial Science or Business/AccountingMBA, ASA or FSA preferred 10 years experience in health care or health insurance field3 years of supervisory experienceKnowledge of financial and risk health arrangements with extensive knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations relating to rating and mandated benefits in the health insurance environmentStrong operational background with ability to prioritize, plan and problem solve in a team environmentDemonstrated ability to interpret extensive amounts of abstract and concrete variables including advanced technical skills in mathAbility to perform under pressure and adapt to rapidly changing prioritiesExcellent interpersonal skills including PC and verbal/written communication skills

 Other Desirable Qualifications

 Extensive knowledge of local marketsEvidence of continued professional growth by successful completion of course work and exams leading to designations such as CHC, FAHM, RHU and CEBSFamiliarity and use of Milliman USA Health Cost guidelines for rating and benefit adjustments
