Director of Laboratory Services
Position Summary:
This position oversees the administrative and operational areas of the clinical &
pathology laboratories. The Laboratory Director will direct the activities of the
laboratory in order to meet the requirements set forth by the job description.
Responsibilities & accountabilities will include the financial performance, quality
assurance and regulatory compliance of the departments; and insuring that lab
services meet the needs of the hospital, patients, physicians and staff.
Duties
Ensures that appropriate test turnaround times are met. To provide
needed lab services to patients & doctors.
Ensures that all regulatory requirements with regard to licensure,
accreditations, safety, training and personnel qualifications are met
or exceeded.
Schedules employees in such a manner to provide adequate time off
and consideration for illness while still meeting turnaround time
requirements.
To be knowledgeable in computer capabilities and functions.
Evaluates, on an ongoing basis, employee performance and to write
regular performance appraisals and such counseling or warnings as may
be required.
Interviews potential candidates for position within the hospital.
Participates in hospital-wide quality and productivity improvement
strategies, to work out mutual concerns and serve as a liaison in
multi-disciplinary projects, to facilitate communication and
cooperation, and to ensure coordination of lab services.
Coordinates quality assurance, quality control, in-service and
continuing education activities.
Directs the development and use of job descriptions, and competency
and performance appraisal documents.
Provides consultation to internal and external contracts by applying
technical expertise to such areas as conflict/problem resolution,
policies and procedures, questions/inquiries, theories/concepts and
techniques.
Facilitates a structured approach to departmental orientation of
new personnel.
Demonstrates leadership, initiative, creativity and critical
thinking in planning and change management.
Initiates communication with medical staff, department managers and
employees to inform of impending changes.
Monitors and maintains safety program and provides needed
in-service, ensuring department and employee compliance with safety
policies and procedures.
Holds and documents regular staff meetings to solicit employees'
opinions and feedback and communicate important issues.
Coaches employees for improved performance and successfully resolves
conflict in a timely manner.
Assesses educational needs (knowledge, skills and competencies) of
employees, works with them to develop an educational plan and holds
them accountable for improvement.
Models and promotes excellent customer service.
Holds employees accountable for behavior and attitudes toward
customers and for follow-up to customer concerns.
Holds employees accountable for compliance with hospital
administrative policies and department specific policies.
Requirements:
Current knowledge of laboratory regulation & NCCLS. Knowledge of regulatory agency requirements (CAP & CLIA) is needed.Must possess a valid state of California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license.At least 5 years of prior management experience is desirable. A master of business administration or hospital administration degree is preferred.
