The Director of Pharmacy is responsible for overseeing all medication storage and preparation in the health system or organization. The director of pharmacy ensures that the pharmacy provides optimal services; meets all legal, accreditation, and certification requirements; and complies with all applicable policies, procedures, codes, and standards of the organization. Principal Duties/ResponsibilitiesDevelops and enforces policies and procedures that promote cost-effective, appropriate, and safe medication useDevelops and maintains a medical staff-approved formularySupervises medication storage and preparation areas throughout the facilityProvides for the educational needs of health care professionals, patients, and their familiesEnsures maintenance of an adequate medication supplyEnsures the integrity of the medication supplyEstablishes specifications for the procurement of medications, chemicals, and biologicalsEnsures strict control and accountability for medications dispensed to patients or distributed to floor stockAssures adequate control and documentation of controlled substancesEnsures applicable continuing education records and licensure are maintained in department filesSupervises all pharmacy personnel and recruits, interviews, promotes, disciplines, and terminates pharmacy staffDevelops job descriptions and performance standardsEvaluates and counsels staff on their performancePrepares work schedules and monitors workload statisticsMaintains an appropriate staffing levelProvides for the educational needs of the pharmacy staffPrepares a pharmacy budget annuallyReviews monthly financial statistics and plans expenditures within budget guidelinesMonitors and justifies all expenses exceeding budgeted targetsEnsures preparation and submission of patient charges and financial reports to administration in accordance with policyAdministers reports, documents, payroll records, statistical surveys, and other required dataEnsures compliance with health system policies and procedures that apply to pharmacy servicesEnsures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations Pharmacy Degree - Bachelor of Science (BS) or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) 1 to 5 years hospital experience with 3 to 5 years in a management position preferred Strong communication skills Proven Profit and Loss (P&L) responsibility and results Ability to manage a team Proven customer service skills
