The Director, Surgical Services will be intimately involved in the planning and construction process for the new 7-story Patient Care Tower including plans for 16 interventional suites, partnering surgery and imaging. Exciting strategic OR department specific initiatives include an expansion to a “Patient- Focused” Joint Replacement Program, Spine Triage Program, Comprehensive Pain Management Program and an expansion of our Cardiac Program. We offer 18 Operating Rooms, with the latest technologies (Davinci Robotic Surgical System) and a broad spectrum of specialties and including, but not limited to open hearts, a strong orthopedic/ neuro focus and retinas. Approximately 13,000 surgeries are performed annually in our Surgical Services Department. The primary responsibility and focus of the Director, Surgical Services will be continuous improvement in the quality of patient care, the patient care experience, and the level of nursing practice within the surgical domain. The Director will be responsible for the assessment, and resulting recommended changes, of policies and programs, effective patient care management, and resource management within the Operating Rooms, PACU, Pre-Admission Testing, Outpatient Surgical Center, and Sterile Processing Department. The Director will participate with the administrative management team, medical staff, and clinical leaders in conducting quality improvement activities, integrating clinical services across the hospital environment, and in developing operating budgets, capital budgets, allocation of resources and policies. The Surgical Services Director will also collaborate with hospital and medical staff leadership in facilitating strong relationships to achieve coordination of patient care activities, achieve strategic growth initiatives and attainment of patient safety and quality goals. This position reports directly to the Vice President, Patient Care and will serve as a member of the Nursing Leadership team. The Director for Surgical Services will have four direct reports and 229 FTE’s in the division. He/she will play a key role in helping to achieve the highest quality healthcare in a clinically and fiscally accountable manner with an overall responsibility for the Surgical Services budget, totaling $35 million dollars in expenses and $134 million dollars in revenue. Knowledge, Skills and Talents: Knowledge of quality improvement concepts with in-depth understanding of patient care procedures and standards. Experience which demonstrates competency in peri-operative nursing. Possesses good grasp clinical work flow in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Well developed financial management skills, including the ability to manage large operating and capital budgets, and effectively use productivity measurements. Well developed written, verbal and formal presentation skills. Possesses a good blend of clinical, analytical and business skills. Experience with, and a genuine commitment to, service excellence and a focus on patient and nursing satisfaction. A solid track record of identifying and solving problems in a non-threatening and creative manner. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work and communicate with all levels of the organization. Must have an open, visible and approachable style. The ability to develop strong working relationships with the medical staff based on mutual respect and trust. Demonstrated success in developing an effective nursing leadership team; and demonstrated ability to mentor and develop nursing staff. Knowledge of clinical care standards and models of patient care delivery. Proficiency in computer use (word processing and spreadsheets), as well as knowledge of leadership. Experience in application of performance improvement principles and tools. Excellent problem-solving skills, above average organizational skills as well as demonstrated ability to develop, implement and evaluate project plans. Demonstrates knowledge of and ability to apply age-specific principles of growth and development and life stages. Minimum Qualifications: BSN and MSN or willingness to accomplish degree within 3 years of job acceptance required. Currently licensed or eligible for licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Oregon. Minimum 3 years peri-operative experience required Minimum 3 years management experience required Adequate visual and hearing ability to read and perform clinical procedures safely. Manual dexterity adequate to perform skills and procedures to assure safe patient care.
