Firefighter/EMT
Under the direction of a shift Captain and/or Lieutenant, protect life and property through fire suppression, fire prevention, rescue and emergency medical aid. Perform hazardous materials containment and provide education to public. Perform work on a full time basis in an hourly position. This position will require that the Firefighter/EMT work 24-hour shifts. The shifts begin at 0800 and end at 0800 the next day. The duty days and hours will be on a 48 hour shift schedule and may change at the discretion of the Director of Emergency Services.
Duties/Responsibilities:
1. Participate in fire suppression and low to high angle rescue activities; operate pumps and other auxiliary fire apparatus.
2. Participate in engine and pumper hook-up at the scene of fire; lay connector hose; hold nozzle and direct water stream to combat fire; raise and climb ladders; use chemical extinguishers, bars, hooks, ropes and other equipment to suppress and extinguish fires.
3. Enter buildings involved in fire that could be potentially life threatening.
4. Drive ambulance and administer emergency medical aid within certification level; prepare medical incident report.
5. Participate in training and continuing education in fire suppression, emergency medical aid, use of equipment, special assignments and other matters; provide training to others as required.
6. Perform salvage and overhaul operations; sweep water; remove debris; search for and extinguish hidden fires; investigate for causes of fire.
7. Participate in apparatus maintenance, testing and inventory control.
8. Perform general maintenance duties for firefighting equipment, apparatus, building and grounds including light to medium repairs, as needed.
9. Participate in developing pre-incident emergency plans.
10. Assist in/perform fire prevention inspections of commercial and residential buildings; check for fire hazards; seek abatement of hazards through education, demonstration and enforcement of regulations; test fire hydrants.
11. Assist in the determination of fire causes; provide fire prevention training as assigned.
12. Participate in physical fitness activities to assure physical readiness to participate in emergency operations.
13. Operate at operations or technician level on hazardous material scenes; respond to incidents involving hazardous materials; wear self-contained breathing apparatus; and use specialized tools and equipment to save lives, protect property, suppress fires.
14. Participate in testing and maintenance of fire extinguishing equipment; complete daily/weekly/monthly check off sheets when required.
15. Provide tours of the facilities to the public and school children; provide educational programs to teach safety and fire prevention.
16. Assist with or Instruct CPR, First Aid classes and other illness/injury prevention concepts to emergency personnel, department staff, and/or citizens.
17. Participate in special committees and projects as assigned.
18. Prepare a variety of related fire and emergency reports and equipment records as assigned and to help ensure proper reimbursement for expenses incurred.
19. Participate on specialized rescue teams as assigned.
20. Responds for wildland fires on the reservation.
21. Establishes and maintains office files, following an established records management system; compiles information from such files; purges files as required.
22. Operates standard office equipment, including job-related computer hardware and software applications, facsimile equipment and multi-line telephones; may operate a two-way radio or other department-specific equipment.
23. Performs peer reviews, at certification level, for QA/QI process.
24. May perform as the IC in an ICS situation until relieved by an officer, and then will assume the position assigned by the IC.
25. Performs other duties as assigned.
