Genetic Counselor

 

Selected individual will provide information and support to families who have members with birth defects or genetic disorders and to families who may be at risk for a variety of inherited conditions.  Will also identify families at risk, investigate the problem present in the family, interpret information about the disorder, analyze inheritance patterns and risks of recurrence and review available options with the family. 

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:  

 

Under the direct supervision of the Director, EPS and Physician Specialists (in the area in which the counselor is working) and within established policies and procedures, the incumbent performs the following: 

 

1. Assists in the development of a multidisciplinary Genetics Counseling Program for Elliot Health System.

 

2. Provides genetic counseling and education with adult and pediatric hereditary diseases.  Serves as patient advocate and refers individuals and families to community or state support services.

 

3. Works directly in the following areas to set up and provide genetic counseling:  Pediatrics, Breast Health, Cancer Programs, Reproductive Endocrinology/Infertility and Obstetrics/Gynecology (other programs as necessary and as qualified).

 

4. Maintains an office both on the hospital campus, as well as, provides services at off-site locations, as needed.

 

5. Engages in research activities related to the field of medical genetics and genetic counseling.

 

6. Assists in the development of a Quality Program for Genetic Counseling and adheres to that program.

 

7. Collects data regarding patient histories and maintains a database for that information.

 

8. Develops educational materials for patients and providers.

 

9. Represents Elliot Health System as it relates to the Genetics Program, as necessary.

 

10. Participates in committees, as necessary.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

 

We require a Master’s Degree in medical genetics and counseling with clinical experience in the areas of medical genetics and counseling.
