Company: Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Location: 02215 Status: Full Time, Employee Job Category: Medical/Health Relevant Work Experience: Less than 1 Year Career Level: Experienced (Non-Manager)    Job Description   Histo/Surgical Tech is a dual role with approximately 70% Surgical Tech and 30% Histo Tech responsibilities Surgical Tech Component: Histo component: 1. Histotechnologists process and embed tissue in paraffin and cut paraffin blocks using micro tomes. 2. Histotechnologists, following Standard Operating Procedures, prepare stains and solutions, stain prepared tissue (including frozen section slides and cytology “Cytospin” preparations) by using routine, special, and immunohistochemical staining processes. They cover slip slides, and evaluate microscopically the quality of stains and sections. 3. Histotechnologists maintain equipment for proper functioning and supply inventories, and notify managers when supplies are low. They store supplies after delivery and maintain clean work. 4. Histotechnologists participate in inter-shift coverage for time off, emergencies, and staffing problems. 5. Histotechnologists prepare out cases for pathologists’ review, and maintain extensive files of blocks and slides. 6. Histotechnologists follow all Medical Center and department policies and procedures for safety and universal precautions. 7. Histotechnologists keep current with developments in histology and participate in mandatory and voluntary continuing educations, competency testing, and Quality Assurance. They collect hazardous chemicals for recycling as part of the Medical Center’s QI initiatives.Primary Duties and Responsibilities: 1) Greets patients and escorts them to room 2) Sets up surgical trays 3) Breaks down surgical trays 4) Cleans and sterilizes equipment 5) Knows and implements proper care and maintenance of surgical equipment 6) Recognizes defective equipment and reports need for repair 7) Orders and stocks rooms with appropriate levels of supplies through purchasing and the Pyxis system 8) Maintains linen inventory 9) Down loads and prints all digital pictures 10) Provides support and assistance to patient and surgeon during surgery or procedures 11) Assists in maintaining patient comfort 12) Recognizes and can utilize sterile techniques 13) Assists surgeons and surgical specialist as necessary during procedures and repairs a) replenishes surgical trays b) retrieves additional equipment or supplies c) adjusts lighting 14) Applies simple dressing under the supervision of the clinical nurse and surgeon 15) Recognizes changes in physical and mental condition of patient and reports to the surgeon, surgeon specialist and/or clinical curse16) Maintains patient confidentiality of patient information an patient privacy as stated in the BIDMC Policy and Procedure manual 17) Maintains yearly competencies 18) Assists in maintaining safe environment for patients and staff 19) Offers suggestions or engages in activities which could enhance quantity and quality of care given to patients.  Qualifications/Skills & Knowledge Requirements: 1) Must have verbal, quantitative and interpersonal skills normally acquired through successful completion of a high school diploma program. 2) Must have completed equivalent of an approved surgical technician training program usually lasting one year beyond high school or equivalent training through extensive on the job training 3) Possesses knowledge of fundamental operation of surgical exam tables, lights, electro surgical units, sterilizer and other related surgical equipment. 4) Must be able to tolerate standing long hours, stooping, lifting and assisting patientsEducation: High school diploma or equivalent is required. Experience: One year of training in a histology lab is required, two years of histology experience. Licenses/certifications: HT(ASCP) certification or eligibility is preferred. Skills: Histotechnologists must have the abilities to prioritize work and communicate effectively with coworkers. They must be able to life and move gallon drums. Reference Code: 08-1001
