INSTITUTIONAL NURSE
$24.22 - $40.12 hourly $1,937.88 - $3,209.84 biweekly $4,198.74 - $6,954.65 monthly $50,384.88 - $83,455.84 annually Under direction, to provide professional nursing care for individuals detained at a County confinement or detention facility; to administer treatment and medication as directed; to assist doctors and carry out their orders; and to do other work as required. This is the journey level class for registered nurses who provide routine and emergency nursing services in an institutional setting. Incumbents of positions in this class perform the entire range of professional nursing duties with a minimum of assistance or supervision from other medical personnel. The class differs from Supervising Institutional Nurse in that the latter supervises a number of professional nurses, and has charge of a nursing program which may encompass more than one detention facility. Examples Of Duties: * Plans and provides professional nursing care to children or adults in a detention facility; initiates treatment in medical emergencies; dresses minor wounds. * Makes routine medical observations on a daily basis, and refers patients to a physician as necessary. * Assists physicians in conducting sick calls and in examining and treating patients; performs physical examinations; as directed, administers prescribed treatment and medication. * Charts treatment of patients, and records and reports significant changes in condition and general progress of patients; maintains records and medical data. * Advises staff, and counsels patients and their families regarding medical problems and proper health care methods; may instruct institutional staff in emergency first aid techniques. * May determine restrictions on physical activities of patients according to medical standards established by the State of California. Typical Qualifications: Experience: Two years of experience as a registered nurse in an acute care hospital or a health care agency; Experience gained as an Interim Permit Nurse may be credited toward meeting the required experience. Knowledge of: The principles, techniques, and procedures used in professional nursing; medical terminology; hospital and clinic routine; the uses and effects of medicines and narcotics. Ability to: Perform the entire range of professional nursing duties and responsibilities; plan and carry out a program of nursing care for detainees; work under limited medical supervision; prepare and maintain concise and complete records and reports; establish and maintain effective relationships with physicians, detainees, and fellow workers. Supplemental Information: Adult detention working hours are 2200-0600. Juvenile detention working hours are 1300-2130.
