Informatics Nurse Specialist

The selected candidate will assist in the coordination of planning, design, development, implementation, maintenance, and ongoing training for the EMR system. This position works under the general direction of the VP/CIO and the direct supervision of the Director, IT. 

 

Primary Functions:

 

• Maintain in-depth knowledge of the software, as well as related organizational policies, procedures and business operations. 

 

• Be responsible for software configuration, business operation analyses, data collection, report details, and other technical issues associated with the use of the EMR.

• Assist in redesign of clinical workflows to accommodate implementation of EMR system.

 

• Guide and assist clinicians and physicians in the design and building of templates and tools that will be used as the foundation of entering required medical information into patient charts or other portions of the EMR.

 

• Provide consultative services to EMR users and implementation team regarding workflow processes and design of appropriate functionality to maximize EMR effectiveness.

 

• Ensure systems are configured and used to maximize benefits for patients and staff.

 

• Evaluate the impact of system change on workflows within the clinical and ancillary departments from clinical, administrative and financial perspectives.

 

• Assist in the change management process, including revamping and/or standardization of workflows; work with staff or other customers to successfully implement the system.

 

• Work with care providers and management to identify issues, analyze data, propose and implement solutions, and monitor and track results. 

 

• Perform in-depth analysis of data flow, data collections, report requirements, and other technical issues associated with the use of the system.

 

• Maintain application software through table management, configuration control, software version control, and account and security administration.

 

• Provide ongoing support for building or maintaining appropriate soft-coded features.

 

• Provide analysis and support for implementation decisions, including feasibility studies, cost benefits analysis, functional specification, workflow development, testing, and training.

 

• Participate in a wide variety of project work crossing multiple functional areas; provide general and specific project support throughout the project life cycle.

 

• Develop and implement educational strategies to promote system understanding, including documentation to facilitate proper system use.

 

• Deliver end-user training and support on proper system use and functionality.

 

• Resolve problems for supported application; coordinate problem resolution efforts with other IS staff members, end-users and non-Elliot resources.

 

• Serve as primary interface between staff and the supporting application vendor.

 

• Develop a working knowledge of all relevant IS tools and utilities.

 

• Maintain knowledge and testing level for certification in specified module.

 

• Work with assigned user groups and other cross-functional team members and vendor support personnel to implement new standard and custom software releases.

 

• Maintain current knowledge of relevant JCAHO standards and requirements.

 

• Audit assigned system databases to ensure the integrity of the system(s). 

 

Qualifications/Requirements:

 

The ideal candidate will possess a BS in Nursing with extensive coursework in mathematics, CS or a computer-related field, or equivalent technical training. Clinical licensure (RN) required. In-depth knowledge of clinical guidelines/procedures and algorithms in a medical/surgical and/or critical care setting is highly desired. Must possess 5 or more years’ direct patient care experience in a medical surgical or critical care environment. Experience managing and/or coordinating activities associated with conversions, major system installation and management of systems (table configuration, security design and standards, data conversion, and naming and numbering conventions) required. Experience coordinating installation related tasks, including analysis of data flow, data collection, and data requirements is also essential. Staff development and training background needed. Experience with PC-based systems operating in a client server environment preferred. Must have in-depth knowledge of clinical operations in an acute care setting along with a general knowledge of the ambulatory setting. Ability to understand system design and process application flows required.
