Mission College is currently accepting applications for two (2) full-time, tenure track nursing instructors.  The successful candidate will be expected to assume departmental responsibilities for curriculum development, evaluation of faculty, and college-wide committee assignments.  Applicants who possess the knowledge, skills, ability, and life experiences to address the cultural and educational needs of a linguistically and culturally diverse student population are encouraged to apply.  




*Categorical Program Status: Continuation of employment is contingent upon funding.




ASSIGNMENT

This is a full-time, 10-month, tenure track position, beginning in Fall 2008. Teaching assignments may require teaching day, evening, or some weekend classes. Additional opportunities for teaching summer and winter classes may also be available.  While typical class assignments will reflect the instructor's individual specialties and skills, the responsibilities may extend across the curricula. The work assignment for teaching faculty consists of class assignments that total a 1.00 load each semester, as determined by the Hours and Load Factor Table, and other responsibilities which are necessary for the effective and efficient operation of the faculty member's, department, college and district.   Work location: Mission College.




SALARY AND BENEFITS

- Initial salary placement range $48,891 (Step 1, Column A) to maximum entry range $76,087 (Step 9, Column F) annually based on academic achievement, teaching and related experience.  Maximum earnable $111, 085 (Step 36, Column F).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

- Master's degree in nursing OR 

- Bachelor’s degree in nursing AND Master's degree in health education or health science OR     

- Possess a valid California Community College Instructor’s credential in nursing OR

- The minimum qualifications as set by the Board of Registered Nursing, whichever is higher

- Master's or higher degree from an accredited college or university which includes course work in nursing, education or administration.

- The equivalent of one year's full-time experience as a registered nurse providing direct patient care.

- Clinical experiences within the last five years must be validated for clinical competency verification (Clinical teaching applies toward direct patient care).

- One academic year's experience teaching nursing courses in pre- or post- licensure nursing programs, which include diploma, associate, baccalaureate, and master's degree registered nursing program OR

- Course in practice teaching is defined as a course given by an accredited college or nursing school which includes teaching strategies, course outline and lesson plan development, practice teaching and evaluation.

- Clinically competent as defined in 1420(c) means that a nursing program faculty member possesses and exercises the degree of learning, skill, care and experience ordinarily possessed and exercised by staff level registered nurses of the clinical unit to which the instructor is assigned.

- The equivalent of the above.   Degrees must be obtained from an accredited institution. Candidates with degrees not identical to the required state or local qualifications must apply for equivalency by completing the equivalency form which is part of the application package.  This form must be completed for employment consideration.

- Candidates with foreign degrees must provide official certification of equivalency to U.S. degrees by a certified U.S. credential review service. Simple translation of the language on foreign diplomas, transcripts, coursework, or similar will NOT suffice; thus, will cause the application packet to be judged as incomplete.

- Demonstrated ability to effectively teach, counsel or work with persons of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.




DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

- Recent experience in Medical Surgical Nursing and one of the following specialty areas: Psychiatric, Obstetric, Pediatrics or Gerontology Nursing.




EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Instructional duties and assignments may consist of one or more of the following:

- Provide instruction for assigned courses.  This includes preparation, in-class activities, evaluation of students' work, consultation with students outside of class, maintenance of currency in the subjects taught and other efforts related to the teaching of the assigned classes.

- Maintain accurate class and other records conforming with state requirements and stated District and college needs.

- Submit, when due, all necessary reports such as attendance, grade reports, rosters, class and office schedules.

- File course outlines for each course with the appropriate division offices. 

- Post and maintain a minimum of three (3) office hours each week. A maximum of two (2) of these hours may be spent working in a location other than the individual’s office (e.g. the tutorial center, computer lab, classroom, etc.) providing the alternate location is approved in advance in writing by the division chair and posted. Office hours must be posted and filed in the division chair’s office on or before the start of the semester. Office hours must be scheduled in no less than 30-minute segments.

- Observe, support and enforce the regulations, policies and programs of the District and college.

- Provide each student with a written course syllabus at the beginning of the course, as per instructions in the Faculty Handbook.

- Refer students to appropriate college sources for information on counseling and other student services.

- Assist students by providing advice on requirements for successful achievement in the member's area of expertise.

- Work cooperatively within the college community.  

- Foster an environment that protects academic freedom within the college community.

- Foster a positive working environment that is free from harassment, prejudice, and/or bias.  

- Demonstrate positive communication skills within the college community.

- Demonstrate a respect for the dignity of each individual.

- Assume institutional responsibilities, which are of value to the department, division, college and/or District such as: actively participate in the spirit of shared governance in department, division, college and district institutional responsibilities.  Such responsibilities may include recruitment and hiring, class schedule preparation, budget development, performance appraisals, mentorship, supervision of support staff, student recruitment and retention, curriculum and program development and evaluation, program review, club advising, committees, accreditation, articulation, and other duties as assigned.
