Lead Coder

The Lead Coder is responsible for implementing, maintaining effective systems for the coding/abstracting and data retrieval areas of the medical record department.  Monitors and evaluates coding work flow and volume and assigns work load as appropriate to ensure timely completion of coding tasks.  Works with HIM Director to ensure DNFC goals are met.  Conducts quality reviews of coding.  Ensures information is accurate and completed within specified time frames for use by physicians, billing and continuing patient care.  Reviews patient records and assigns accurate codes for each diagnosis and procedure.  Applies knowledge of medical terminology, disease processes and pharmacology.  Demonstrates tested data quality and integrity skills.

Qualifications

RHIT preferred, CCS required.  Three years minimum experience in all facets of medical record coding activities in an acute care setting.  Ability to modify systems and procedures to improve efficiency and productivity.  Ability to recognize, establish and handle priorities.  Interacts with physicians, other hospital employees and administration.  Must demonstrate leadership skills.
