MEDICAL RECORDS TECHNICIAN
Monthly Salary Range: $3,163 - $4,040


THE POSITION
The Contra Costa County Health Services Department is recruiting individuals to fill two vacant Medical Records Technician positions. Positions are located at the Contra Costa Regional Medical Center Martinez.

Medical Records Technicians are responsible for completing detailed analysis of medical records for chart content and documentation requirements. They also assign diagnostic and procedural codes using the ICD-9-CM and CPT-R coding systems. Additional duties include: assigning, backing-up, and reviewing the work of clerical staff engaged in medical records processing activities; assisting physicians in the preparation and/or completion of disability, compensation, and insurance forms and death certificates; assisting the public with information regarding medical claims and disability benefits; and assisting in the training, orientation, and performance evaluation of employees.

The employment list resulting from this examination may remain in effect for six (6) months.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
License: A valid California Driver’s License may be required for some positions.

Education: Twelve (12) months of full-time experience (or the equivalent of full-time experience) in either 1) the medical records work unit of an acute care hospital or ambulatory care clinic or, 2) in an authorization unit of a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO), or 3) in an outpatient pharmacy setting.

Substition: Either 1) graduation from an accredited Health Information Technology program; 2) graduation from an educational program for Registered Health Information Technician or Registered Health Information Administrator approved by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA); or 3) successful completion of the AHIMA correspondence course for medical records personnel may be substituted for the required experience.

Typing Requirement: Ability to type at a net typing speed of 40 words per minute. A performance test is not required for applicants currently employed in a position in Contra Costa County that requires the ability to type at a net typing speed of 40 words per minute.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Prior to employment a background investigation will be conducted. Fingerprints will be taken.

The Human Resources Department may change the examination steps noted above in accordance with Personnel Management Regulations and accepted selection practices.
