Job Summary:
The Mammography Technologist under the direction of a radiologist, performs a variety of breast imaging procedures that require independent judgment, initiative and competency.

Major Tasks, Duties & Responsibilities:Obtains optimum quality breast images for radiologist interpretation and assists radiologist. Specializes in production of screening and diagnostic X-rays for detection of breast tumors. Prepares patients for mammographic procedures. Explains procedures to patient to reduce anxieties and obtain patient cooperation. Moves X-rays equipment into specified position and adjusts equipment controls to set exposure factors, such as time and distance, based on knowledge of radiographic exposure techniques and protocols. Practices radiation protection techniques, using beam restrictive devices, patient shielding skills, and knowledge of applicable exposure factors, to minimize radiation to patient and staff. Follows prescribed safety standards in operating all required radiological equipment. Selects length and intensity of radiation exposure by adjusting equipment on individual patient basis. Examines radiologic film– delivers, picks up and returns films after reading/interpretation. Insures equipment is in working order– reports equipment malfunctions to supervisor. Processes routine paperwork.  Maintains X-ray storage and filing. Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations. Performs other duties as required. Maintains patient confidentiality.




Requirements:

 

§ Current certification with the American Registry of Radiologic Technololgists (ARRT), successfully completes certification in the specialty of mammography within twelve months of hire.

§ Graduate of an accredited School of Radiologic Technology.

§ Must be computer literate. Ability to move, assemble, clean and use complex equipment and supplies to provide information and quality care through diagnostic analysis in a timely manner.

§ Must be able to see, hear, move about freely and orally communicate with patient.

§ Knowledge of radiology equipment and testing– skill in identifying equipment problems.

§ Knowledge of safety hazards common to radiology, including equipment, body mechanics, and patient movement.
