Medical Coder

 

Summary:     

Assign diagnosis and procedure codes to patient data.  Reviews documentation in patient medical records and applies national and facility/practice guidelines to select the proper diagnosis and procedure codes.

Primary Duties: Abstracts clinical information from a variety of medical records and assigns appropriate ICD 9 CM and/or CPT codes to patient records according to established procedures. Performs audits to ensure adherence with CPT and ICD 9 Coding guidelines; federal, state, and commercial payer billing guidelines and payment policies for all services. Ensures strict confidentiality of patient and financial records. Ensures compliance with HIPAA. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must be certified with the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or American Association of Professional Coders (AAPC) Familiarity with coding and billing software programs Familiarity with anatomy and physiology Demonstrated understanding of Medical terminology, Disease processes, Pharmacology and Application of ICD-9-CM and CPT and HCPCS Level II coding systems Familiarity with standard concepts, practices, and procedures in variety of practice settings Associates Degree Required  Must have strong problem solving skills Must have a strong work ethic with the ability to work independently Excellent communication and customer service skills  Computer skills with A working knowledge of Excel is required  A successful candidate would be flexible, energetic and a team player  Work Environment/Physical Requirements: This position will be worked on-site at CodeOne premises Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work  Tasks will involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation No or very limited exposure to physical risk
