Overview

 

The Writer works directly with the Chair, Faculty Services Office administrators, Division Chiefs and individual faculty members to draft promotion letters that meet the Department of Medicine and Harvard Medical School standards.  Assists in the preparation of miscellaneous speeches, presentations, letters of recommendation and confidential letters of evaluation.  Exemplary writing and communication skills are required along with a high degree of professionalism.

 

Works in conjunction with the Editor and Web Designer to produce a professional product.

 Works closely with the Promotions Administrator to monitor status and progress of promotions in process.

 Review faculty CVs for conformity with HMS format and advises individual faculty members and their designated assistants on specific recommendations.  This activity included extensive email communication and occasional meetings.  Makes recommendations to faculty members to assure that the edited CV fully reflects the faculty member’s accomplishments.

 Writes and/or edits promotion letters to the standards of the Chairman and Executive Vice Chairman of Medicine.  Works with Division Chairs to assure that content and format is appropriate.

 

 Participates in Faculty Services Office (FSO) staff meetings. Works with members of the FSO to update and improve content of informational materials on the Faculty Services intranet site.  Participates in the development and implementation of new database.

 Prepares presentations, speeches, letters of recommendation and letters of evaluation as needed.

 Works as the primary editor of the Department of Medicine’s annual report, which will be reviewed and updated on an annual basis.  This will include content review and editing, developing consistency of format and producing a finished document within a defined period of time (typically between the months of January and April).

 Other duties as assigned

Requirements

 Requires a Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 3 years experience in writing or editorial work. 

 A solid understanding of medical terminology as a well as a familiarity with life sciences is required.

 Outstanding written and communication skills.

 Must demonstrate an ability to absorb, organize and translate complex clinical information for a lay audience.  A basic understanding of print production and strong computer skills are required.
