SUMMARY OF POSITION DESCRIPTION:
This is highly technical work in the analysis and support of Local- and Wide-Area based network operating system software and applications. Responsibilities include operating system installation and configuration, performance tuning, storage utilization tracking, software use metering, server and workstation configuration documentation, data security and backup, and physical inventory. The support role includes working closely with department administrators and other IS support personnel to specify needed software or hardware solutions for network access, and implementation of these solutions. Also included is the requirement to troubleshoot complex hardware and software problems and to work with suppliers in their resolution. The quality of work must be high as an error could have a direct negative affect on patient care, fiscal or administrative decision- making.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
1. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent, Computer Information Systems or any discipline compatible with the support of networked microcomputers, or equivalent experience. Five or six years experience in micro-computing at the level of systems software support, with a minimum of 4 years in support of networked systems using Novell Netware. A Novell Certified (CNE) certification or Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) certification or equivalent practical experience is preferred.
2. Extensive knowledge of local- and wide-area-networked systems including hardware, operating systems, bridges, routers, transport protocols (including IPX/SPX and TCP/IP), and routing protocols.
3. In-depth knowledge of the installation, troubleshooting, and administration of network operating systems.
4. A high degree of familiarity with operating system as pertains to the support of database and other application servers.
5. High familiarity with networking protocols and network architecture.
6. Knowledge and demonstrated proficiency with current microcomputer software packages.
7. Extensive knowledge of the Intel-based PC architecture.
8. A strong understanding of async communications, including remote access to local- and wide-area networks.
9. An in-depth understanding of server hardware technology including high-performance RAID and data-mirroring subsystems, high-bandwidth network interface cards, and high-capacity backup and archival systems.
10. Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively and express ideas clearly both verbally and in writing in non-technical terms for users at all levels and in technical terms for most hardware/software analysts.
11. Ability to analyze complex software problems and develop technical or procedural solutions to those problems.
12. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, user department personnel and hardware/software suppliers.
13. Considerable knowledge of practices, procedures, and equipment used in computer operations.
14. Ability to instruct users and support personnel in the use of microcomputer software and hardware.
