Clinical Masters in Nursing, in area of specialization, is required. Graduate of accredited school of nursing. California Clinical Nurse Specialist Certification in area of specialty required.  LICENSE/CERTIFICATION:  Current California RN license required. Current CPR certificate required. ACLS or PALS Certification preferred. Current California BRN Clinical Nurse Specialist Certification required. Current Certification by American Association of Neuroscience Nursing is required. JOB SUMMARY:  Provides in-depth clinical expertise in a defined area of nursing practice (eg., pediatrics, oncology, adult medicine). Develops and ensures quality standards for nursing practice for a specific patient population. Provides advanced clinical practice education, consultation, research and administration. QUALIFICATIONS:  Three years experience in area of specialty required. Demonstrated clinical expertise in area of specialty. Demonstrated clinical expertise in area of specialty is required. Demonstrated effective human relation skills required. Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills required. Active participation in professional nursing organizations preferred. ACLS required within 6 months of hire. DUTIES:  Establishes and monitors neuroscience patient care standards and makes recommendations for changes in clinical practice. Serves as a role model for Neuro Nursing Practice. Collaborates with the nursing staff in assessing patient, family, and age-specific nursing needs. Assists in developing the plan of care for complex high-risk patients that is multidisciplinary. Insures patient and family participation in that plan. Supports patient self-management.Evaluates the effectiveness of the care provided with appropriate data analysis and ensures that data is timely, accurate and complete. Designs teaching programs for patients/families and provides assistance to nursing staff in program implementation. Maintains/updates patient education materials for inpatient and outpatient with annual review. Provides education for patients and families in the theory and skills necessary to manage their disease(s). In conjunction with members of the Neuroscience Team, assesses staff knowledge and identifies competency-based education needs of staff members. Also design and implements education programs to insure the quality of staff knowledge and skills. Provides an ongoing program to recruit and retain Neuroscience Nurses. Conducts Recruitment Neuro workshops. Provide current regional Neuro Critical Care workshops.Develops identified Neuroscience nurse performers to become clinical experts, clearly defining required knowledge of clinical, regulatory and document standards at the bedside. Maintain the Neuroscience Nursing Career Pathway document and review annually. Competency will be assessed when new techniques or responsibilities are introduced and annually.Develops and maintains a formal Clinical Mentorship Program for Neuroscience Nurses. Develops implements and evaluates a Neuro Nursing Orientation and Neuro Nursing Competency Documents that are reviewed annually. The orientation provides information and necessary training appropriate to program responsibilities. Provides consultation to physicians, nurses and other health care providers in meeting care needs of individual or groups of patients in both outpatient and inpatient settings. Makes recommendations to revise standards of care or standards of practice based on research. Defines and implements best nursing practices.Provides written input to the manager for Staff Nurse Evaluation addressing clinical competence for the purpose of coaching and counseling.Assists in developing the Neuroscience Center Quality Plan. Collects and analyzes data regarding patient care provision, outcomes, trends, morbidity and mortality.  Recommends performance improvements as a result of the analysis of the quality metrics. Collects and analyzes data regarding patient care outcomes, trends, morbidity and mortality. Supports the Neuroscience Center by Committee and meeting participation. This includes the Stroke Steering Committee, Unit Multidisciplinary Care Rounds, Neuro/Radiology Conference, Neuroscience Nursing Administration Committee, Pain Committee, and presenting policies and procedures at the Nursing Policy and Procedure Committee.Consistently supports compliance and the Principles of Responsibility (Kaiser Permanente’s Code of Conduct) by maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of information, protecting the assets of the organization, acting with ethics and integrity, reporting non-compliance, and adhering to applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations, accreditation and licenser requirements (if applicable), and Kaiser Permanente’s policies and procedures.
