RN INTERNSHIP PROGRAM: The Nurse-Intern Program at PBMC is designed to support the new graduate nurse in making the transition from student to competent clinical practitioner. This program focuses on clinical, technical, professional, and educational experiences which will assist the new nurse in developing his/her full potential to provide cost-effective, safe, quality patient care. The Nurse-Intern Program will follow the Competency-Based Nurse Orientation. Phase I (three weeks) corresponds with the general nursing orientation and includes introductory information such as, physical layout of the facility, pertinent hospital policies, and location of manuals and necessary supplies. Clinical exposure will be minimal during this three-week phase. It is during this phase the Nurse-Intern will take the medication administration exam, complete the skills checklist, be given initial meditech training, and be assigned a preceptor. Phase II (9 - 21 weeks depending on the unit of orientation) provides progressive clinical experiences. The purpose of this phase is to prepare the Nurse-Intern for his/her staff nurse position. As mentioned above the emphasis of this phase will follow the Competency-based Nurse Orientation for the clinical Unit.

This is a paid internship based on a 32 hours/week, benefited position. Internships will begin in May/June 2008. Internships are primarily on the Med/Surg Unit with possible opportunity for specialization into Critical Care, OB/GYN, Emergency Department, Operating Room, etc.

Minimum Qualifications: Current matriculation in an accredited school of nursing for RN preparation. Successful completion of at least one medical-surgical rotation. Students interested in critical care (e.g. ED, CCU, Telemetry, OR and PACU) must have completed two medical-surgical rotations. Current CPR certification required . Proof of Authorization to Test letter is required.
