PARALEGAL I/II
$17.93 - $27.06 hourly $3,107.71 - $4,691.02 monthly $37,292.53 - $56,292.29 annually Performs a variety of paralegal duties for the District Attorney's Office under the direction of Deputy District Attorneys; assists attorneys in the preparation of cases for trial and hearing matters; prepares exhibits and witnesses for trial; and performs other related work as required. Openings are in the Indio Office location only.Paralegal I is the first working level in the paralegal class series. Paralegals at this level perform a wide variety of paralegal duties and are responsible for progressively more complex legal research, analysis, and document preparation. Paralegal II is the second and full working level in the class series, and promotion to this level is on a competitive basis. Incumbents are required to understand and apply a more extensive, developed, and complex range of legal knowledge and skills. Paralegals are distinguished from various other legal classifications where the duties are less technical and focus on procedural or administrative tasks such as scheduling, calendaring, typing, proofing, or recordkeeping. SEE HOW TO APPLY BELOW: Examples Of Duties: * Researches and analyzes law sources such as statutes, ordinances, court decisions, criminal pleadings, police reports, legal documents and articles for use in preparing legal documents such as briefs, pleadings, contracts, deeds, opinions, etc., for review, approval, and use by an attorney. * Interviews witnesses, defendants, and others in civil or criminal cases for pre-trial or prehearing declarations and prepares discovery requests and responses. * Drafts motions, memoranda of points and authorities, interrogatories and answers, complaints and answers, cross-claims, affidavits, and declarations. * Reviews legal documents and forms for completeness and conformance to specific requirements set forth in applicable legal codes. * Reviews and processes requests for criminal record background information in order to determine the existence or non-existence of prior convictions. * Obtains criminal record information and related documents and screens for legal sufficiency; Gathers factual information and performs routine legal research to assist an attorney in determining appropriate legal action. * Performs preliminary analysis of legislative bills and researches legislative histories. * Summarizes, organizes, and indexes prior opinions, testimony, depositions, and documentary material from interrogatories; Organizes and indexes trial documents, prepares exhibits and assists attorneys at trial by keeping track of exhibits, testimony and documents. * Researches and identifies placement resources for alternative sentencing of clients and assists in the placement therein of clients. Typical Qualifications: Minimum Requirements: Paralegal I1) Certification of completion of a legal assistant or paralegal training program accredited by the California Department of Education, or equivalent accreditation authority in another state. Paralegal II1) Certification of completion of a legal assistant or paralegal training program accredited by the California Department of Education, or equivalent accreditation authority in another state. 2) One year of experience as a Paralegal I with Riverside County or in a law office performing paralegal duties that demonstrates possession of the knowledge and abilities relevant to the specific assignment. Knowledge of: Principles of civil and criminal law and their application; legal research methods and techniques; preparation of briefs and opinions; resources available in a law library; trial and hearing procedures and rules of evidence; County government functions and legal responsibilities. Ability to: Perform legal research; interview witnesses; analyze legal problems; prepares drafts of legal documents; present statements of fact, law, and argue clearly and logically in written and oral form; interpret applicable State and Federal codes, laws, and statutes; work cooperatively with others.
