Personal Fitness Professional
This is a rare opportunity for aspiring or existing personal fitness trainers to attain professional status, professional recognition, and professional compensation, but it isn’t a walk in the park. It’s a job. A job complete with requirements, responsibilities, and commitments. For the right person, a person with a true passion for helping others, a person with a willingness to challenge him or herself, for a person willing to question convention and explore a greater level of excellence, it’s a job that comes with a greater sense of reward than anything else you’ll ever do in your entire life. My name is Phil Kaplan. You can learn more about me by visiting www.philkaplan.com I’m committed to excellence, I maintain an undying commitment to bettering the lives of others, and my two partners and I are excited about our vision, a vision already well in motion. We are going to build the best personal training team on the planet, and we may arguably already be sitting on the pinnacle. We recognize that excellence is a moving target, thus we always strive for betterment. How does that translate to you coming on board as a personal trainer? Hold on. We’re not there yet. First I want to narrow the field. We’re looking for people with extraordinary people skills. Not ordinary people skills. Extraordinary. If you’re questioning whether your ability to connect with people teeters around average, with no disrespect intended, stop here. There are many opportunities for ambitious personal trainers. This is an opportunity for ambitious personal trainers with extraordinary people skills. If you’re still with me, here’s a simple statement that is intended to prevent anyone from wasting their time or mine. YOU MUST BE CERTIFIED BY A RESPECTED AND RECOGNIZED CERTIFICATION AGENCY. Ideally we’d prefer certification by ACE, NSCA, Fitness Institute, or NASM. We’d accept AFAA, ISSA, NCSF, or ACSM. If you hold a certification not included in my short list, and you feel it deems review, call or send an email before you send a resume or schedule an interview to ask if we recognize the certification as credible as baseline evidence of competence. You can call or email my Personal Training Director, Sean. His number is 954-915-0080, his email, sean@fitness21.com . Of course we’d accept an exercise-related four-year degree from a U.S. University, but only if you’re willing, within the first 90 days of employment, to sit for the NSCA exam. At this point I’m sure some of you are reading with disgust. Perhaps this comes across as arrogant. It isn’t intended that way. The personal training field isn’t regulated or mandated by any governing body, and there are over 100 certifications of which a handful have credence. When we run a help wanted ad, people apply with the following reasons behind their visit: • I like working out • Everyone tells me I’m motivating • I know a lot about the body and I’ve competed in bodybuilding These are all admirable, but they aren’t credentials. They aren’t indicators of competence. We need our trainers to recognize risk factors, to understand how and when to apply the methodologies and modalities they might have been introduced to, and more importantly, how to design safe, challenging programs regardless of the demographic. Seniors? We’ve got ‘em. Pro athletes? Yup. Bodybuilders? Sure. Soccer Moms, CEOs, former athletes, teens, obese, and the recreationally competitive all exercise at Fitness 21 side by side without any intimidation. This is not a typical health club. The energy and sense of family is something rare in our industry. Our members take pride in their memberships. Our Personal Training staff must serve these members and serve them by delivering far more value than members expect. If you have the right stuff, I’ll personally teach you to streamline your talents, to zero in on being the best you can be. The tone of this ad, therefore, isn’t meant to come across as arrogant, but rather as forceful to narrow the field and set up quality interviews with quality people who have the desire and the hunger to be part of an exceptional team. If you aren’t certified, but are tempted to apply, here’s my suggestion. Apply for the ACE or NSCA exam first. Then call. Even though right now we’re aggressively hunting for trainers, I always have my eyes open for “the X-Factor.” If you’re still here, I applaud you, but I haven’t quite finished narrowing the field. Egos are best left at the door. All of our trainers share a trait, and it’s a developed trait which we’ll teach you to master. They all have an acceptable level of knowledge in anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, and human nutrition, but the key trait is this: They have an exceptional knack for using their knowledge to better the lives of others. Will you earn a million dollars as a trainer at Fitness 21? Not likely. Will we give you clients when you arrive? Sorry. We will, however, do something far better. We’ll teach you to master influence without ever feeling as if you’re selling. We’ll position you as a professional. We’ll put you in front of a qualified audience made up of individuals Can you train people your first week of work? Absolutely not. If we are going to build on the team we have, we have to hire talent and then integrate that talent into our existing force by making certain all new trainers speak the same language. We live by a term I’ve coined, “Synergy.” It’s the combination of three synergistic elements. The Right Nutrition, Moderate Aerobic Exercise, and a Concern for Muscle. If any one of those elements is absence, results will be compromised. Although we expect our new trainers to come in with a high level of knowledge, we have to teach you to gel your knowledge with our positioning, our presentation, and our ever-growing power to deliver. By this point I would guess I’ve scared away 85% of those who were attracted to the ad. If you’re thinking, “this is for me . . .,” here comes the good part. Our trainers earn between $35,000 and upwards of $70,000. We’ll challenge you the first week in our Fitness 21 Academy. The curriculum is a curriculum I teach internationally for over $700 per attendee. Of course, if you’re a candidate we’ll invite you to attend. The Academy will completely change the way you think about your own power. It will raise to a degree you never knew was possible. In the first four days you’ll come to see a level of professionalism most trainers will never be exposed to, and best of all, you’ll learn to step right into reframing your own career. You won’t earn much in the first 30 days, but beyond the first week of the Academy, you’ll be exposed to cutting edge programming, a revolutionary 21-day transformational regimen, and you’ll come to understand human influence so thoroughly you’ll feel unstoppable. You’ll of course be challenged, but your efforts will be supported and will pay off in performance and production outcomes that should thrill you. Dedicate yourself fully to making the first 30 days the most transformational educational experience of your life and you’ll find yourself at the top of the field with nowhere to go but upward. In the first 30 days you’ll be a guest on my radio show, you’ll write articles that promise to be read and responded to, you’ll present in front of groups, and you’ll prepare for Day 31 forward. Breaking it down a bit further, the first 30 days will not send you to financial joyland, but they will prove the key to building an ever-growing career as a part of the Fitness 21 team. The Academy is conducted gratis (comp) for accepted candidates, but you are not compensated to attend. The following week you'll work 15 - 20 hours at $9 per hour. We don't want anyone to be thrilled with that, but it's a continued part of your education. By your third week, if you give it your all, you should be scheduling client sessions and starting to earn. By the end of your 8th week your income should be significant and will be in your control. After 12 weeks of active training there are very real opportunities to earn more . . . and more. The next Academy starts June 2nd. By June 4th anyone who makes it through the Academy will be a part of the Fitness 21 team as a trainer, earning, learning, and finding extreme emotional reward. Speaking of "making it through," you get points for making it all the way through the ad. Now I’ll make the next step simple. Call Sean. He’ll ask you four questions and I’m going to give you a head start by telling you what the questions are. 1. Who are you certified through? 2. Why in the world did you read the entire ad? 3. Why do you have interest in joining the Fitness 21 team? 4. Based on what you already know about Fitness 21 and Phil Kaplan, what is the one question you’d like Phil to answer in your first interview? After the short conversation with Sean, which is a screening process in itself. If you seem to be a great candidate, we’ll invite you for a second more extensive conversation, and if all goes well we’ll invite you to attend the Academy. Sean can be reached at 954-915-0080. That’s it. I’m exhausted. I have to go eat and sleep. Thanks for hanging with me this long and I look forward to meeting you.
