Job Description: The Radiation Safety Office of the Mount Sinai Medical Center (MSMC) is seeking an experienced and motivated individual to join its team of radiation safety professionals as a Health Physicist, under the general supervision of the Radiation Safety Officer or his designee. The successful candidate in this visible and responsible position will assist in the continuing development, implementation and maintenance of a broad-license, academic and medical radiation safety program at a major research-oriented Medical Center. Specific duties of this position include but are not limited to the following: * Assure MSMC compliance with all applicable New York City, New York State and Federal regulations regarding the use, storage, receipt, shipping and disposal of radioactive materials. * Plan, schedule and perform radiation safety audits, surveys and inspections of clinical departments, research laboratories and all facilities using or proposing to use radioactive materials or sources of radiation. * Audits and inspections of the facilities of Responsible Investigators approved by the IRB, RDRC or RSC for the use of radioisotopes or X-rays in investigations involving human subjects to ensure compliance with MSMC institutional requirements and with FDA and other governmental regulations. Assist in the review of Human Use protocols submitted to the RSC or to the RDRC * Conduct ALARA reviews and investigations. Provide radiation safety and health physics support to clinical departments and research laboratories. * Operate and maintain a program to monitor discharges of radioisotopes from MSMC facilities under the requirements of any possible future New York State Department of Conservation Radiation Control Permit including obtaining and maintaining records of the use of volatile radioisotopes by Responsible Investigators and clinical departments and preparing discharge reports and summaries. * Additional duties may include: measurement of air and effluent flows and velocities in Medical Center's stacks, hoods and rooms; calibration of radiation detectors and flow measurement instruments; operation of TLD based environmental radiological monitoring programs; assist in preparing New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Permits and New York City Bureau of Radiological Health R.A.M. License applications and renewals; maintain inventories of radioactive sources and test radioactive sources for leakage; operate radiological assay and survey equipment as directed; emergency response to incidents involving radiation or radioactivity and other technical responsibilities as directed by the Sr. Director of the Radiation Safety Office.Job Qualifications: M.S. Degree in medical physics, health physics or the equivalent; a graduate degree (M.S. or Ph.D. in physics, chemistry or environmental science will be considered. Two years of progressive experience in radiation safety, health physics or radiological monitoring. Excellent verbal, written and personal communications skills. Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, take initiative and work independently. Computer support and project management skills, including ability to maintain and develop RSO management software.
