Pre-Op/PACU Nurse

 

JOB SUMMARY:

 

The Registered Nurse in surgery provides expert professional nursing care for the patient during the pre-operative and post-operative course.  The RN assesses, plans, implements and evaluates the care of patients throughout surgical intervention. As needed, one of the RN’s in surgery will supervise any ancillary staff, to include Licensed Practical Nurses and Medical Assistants.

 



QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Minimum requirements include a graduation from an accredited school of nursing; current State license; and CPR certification.  Two years of pre-operative and/or post-operative recovery room experience and/or critical care experience, to include medical or surgical intensive care units is desired.  Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification is needed.

 

Preferred accomplishments include experience in out-patient surgery.  The applicant must be able to communicate effectively, and have an ability to work compatibly with all physicians and staff.  The preferred applicant will possess strong organizational skills, and a clear understanding of the importance of efficiency and cost effectiveness in an ambulatory surgery center.

 

The applicant needs to have the knowledge and clinical skills to perform the job duties of a pre-op/PACU nurse. A knowledge of aseptic technique, anesthetic agents and complications, and ability to handle emergency situations is required.

 

Must have an aptitude for understanding, use of, and troubleshooting machines and equipment. 

 

Applicant should have an ability to be flexible in job duties and work schedule.

 

Physical guidelines include ability to stand/walk for up to eight hours per day; bend, stoop, twist; assist patients in turning, rising from recliners and stretchers, assist patients in and out of wheelchairs, push wheelchairs, and assist with the moving of patients on and off the operating room table.  Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and carry materials weighing up to 25 pounds.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

The primary responsibility of the RN will be to perform the duties of a pre-op/PACU Nurse. The RN will perform the duties of that role, as staffing requires, in all areas of the surgery center.

 Work with all members of the health care team to provide optimal care to the patient, throughout their surgical experience.Maintain a friendly, positive and caring attitude with all patients, physicians and staff.  Maintain excellent physical and mental health.Assist in patient education during all phases of their experience.Assist in assuring that the proper supplies, instruments and equipment are available for the procedure. Assist in assuring that equipment is functioning  properly. Assist supervisor with preparation of budget. Monitor use of and charge for all supplies used during procedure.  Assist with inventory control by proper count of supplies/time used. Document appropriately the care that is given to the patient. Continue education to meet state requirements and keep current with health care issues.Identifies actual and potential risk to patients and others and takes action to minimize or eliminate risk and maximize safety.Performs charge nurse responsibilities as staffing demands and as requested.
