Statement of Position Duties and Responsibilities

Under direction of the facility Administrator, serves as facility Director of Nursing, with 24-hour accountability to supervise the overall operation of nursing administration.  Plans and organizes the general operations of the nursing care units in order to coordinate nursing care, restorative nursing, and physical therapy.  Plans, develops, and directs the implementation of programs and procedures to ensure that the standards of the facility meet the Department of Public Health, Veterans’ Administration, and Medicare requirements as they relate to direct patient care functions.  Provides clinical recommendation to the Administrator which they must consider to set policy of the facility.  Monitors the development, revision, and improvement of new policies and procedures as recommended by the Federal, State, and VA health care inspectors. 

 

 

Specialized knowledge, skill, abilities, licensure or certification necessary for the successful performance of the work of this position.

Requires licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois with graduation from an approved nursing education program.  Requires Associates Degree in Nursing and five (5) years progressively responsible professional nursing experience, or a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and four (4) years of progressively responsible nursing experience or a Master’s Degree in Nursing and two (2) years of professional nursing experience.  Requires thorough knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice and of recent developments in the field of nursing.  Requires ability to develop programmatic goals and objectives designed to maximize nursing care services.  Requires ability to correlate and interrelate facilitywide patient care services with those of other professional and administrative goals and objectives.  Requires ability to develop broad organizational and staffing changes to improve nursing care quality and services.  Requires ability to determine physical and human resource needs and to allocate and account for reflective use of such resources.  Requires ability to develop, interpret, implement and enforce policies, procedures, and practices relating to the area of nursing care.  Requires ability to develop effective working relationships with other facility personnel and subordinate staff.  Familiarity with applicable union contracts.
