We are one of the leading insurance companies in the United States.  Our superior financial strength and consistent record of strong operating returns mean security for our customers - and opportunities for our employees.  You will find Travelers to be full of energy and a workplace in which you truly can make a difference. We are currently looking for an Associate Counsel, First Party/No Fault Unit.  Please read on for more details regarding this position. JOB DESCRIPTION: SUMMARY:Provides legal support to experienced counsel as part of the litigation process; works as part of legal team in the defense of office clients; effectively represents clients in legal proceedings commensurate with abilities; provides quality and cost effective advocacy by demonstrating increasing professional development, knowledge and expertise in the litigation process. PRIMARY DUTIES:Works under the direction and supervision of experienced counsel in reviewing litigation files and learning about the First-Party/No-Fault litigation process.Provides input and recommendations to others on appropriate file handling strategy.Provides legal research as directed and demonstrates effective and persuasive legal writing skills.Drafts pleadings, motions, briefs, discovery and other file documents as directed by experienced counsel.Demonstrates personal commitment to professional development by seeking out opportunities for exposure to the litigation process.Attends court events and other appointments with or under the supervision of experienced counsel.Responds to Managing Counsel and others within the office, clients, claim customers and courts in a timely manner.Demonstrates desire to acquire effective trial skills with the goal of trying cases in state and federal courts, and before arbitration commissions, commensurate with abilities.May handle a reduced caseload with appropriate supervision, as determined by Managing Counsel.Effectively utilizes office resources to assure smooth workflow and cost effectiveness.Learns and understands claim customers' expectations and key department business goals and assists them in meeting those goals.Completes and submits time sheets, reports, closed cases and other materials appropriate to performance of job duties in a timely manner.Handles special projects as assigned. EDUCATION/WORK EXPERIENCE:Graduation from an accredited law school with a strong academic record1-3 years of relevant legal experienceSuccessful completion of the bar examination in the state of New York. OTHER:First Party/No-Fault Experience helpful but not required.Strong written communication and oral presentation skillsMastering of appropriate technology resources including Microsoft WordAbility to quickly learn and adapt to case management and other office systemsDecision making and problem solving abilitiesAbility to work effectively as part of a teamPersonal integrity and adherence to highest professional standardsAppreciation for and demonstration of quality legal workAbility and desire to acquire client and claim service orientation In addition to an exciting environment, we offer: * Competitive base salary with additional opportunities for variable pay through recognition programs and incentive awards * 401(k) with company match* Comprehensive health plans that include coverage for same sex/domestic partners* Strong work/family and employee assistance programs* Tuition reimbursement * Vacation Purchase Plan* Training/Development opportunities We are proud to provide comprehensive, high quality employee programs to meet employees' needs now and in the future, including a very competitive financial package.
