Product Underwriting Staff Director (New York Office)

JOB SUMMARY:
Directs the oversight and management of commercial or personal line product(s) staff function. Responsible for developing and recommending underwriting policies, procedures and standards. Ensures coordination between home office and field operations. Supports the development and directs the implementation of strategies that support multiple product related profitability objectives. Supports assigned state/regional and operations functions. Manages related staff support function(s).
RELATIONSHIP: Reports to Vice President or Officer
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for the servicing of daily underwriting referrals submitted by our MGA partners and reviewing with VP wherein referral exceeds his/her underwriting authority.
- Liaison with Operations and Finance to ensure smooth administration of data transfer, billing, accounts receivable, coding, policy issuance, etc... Responsible for providing regular reports to management on production, service standards, etc...
- Work with MGA partner and third party vendors to develop loss control/risk management tools as well as other educational and/or informational initiatives as may be assigned.
- Work closely with VP Programs and appropriate Scotttsdale Associates in the vetting of new program opportunities as they arise.
- Be an active participant in the development of an internet strategy for support, education and information for our broker clients and policyholders
- Assists in the development of strategy and direction for the assigned product(s). Participates in key initiatives to address the product strategy and profitability objectives. Reinforces understanding, communication and execution of product/ underwriting strategy.
- Provides technical assistance and support to state/regional underwriting and services leadership. Maintains relationships with new entities, access points and distribution channels that need the support and expertise of product/underwriting staff operations.
- Responsible for project management for assigned profitability initiatives. Ensures that each area within the function is following the formal project management process for those projects designated as high priority.
- Serves on various committees, project teams and industry boards as assigned.
- Responsible for various support functions such as product functional audits, training, vendor selection and management, employee career enhancement, competitive monitoring, systems, and liaison to other business units (systems, services, claims, pricing, distribution, marketing, etc.)
- Manages the hiring, supervising, training, and promoting of candidates regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, or disability in support of Nationwide's affirmative action programs.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Education/Knowledge:
• Bachelor's degree or post-graduate studies in Business, Finance or Economics preferred
• Relevant professional designation such as CPCU highly desirable
• Requires proven knowledge of property/casualty products, insurance company operations, field and staff functions, industry trends, and project management
• Ten years property casualty (personal and/or commercial) lines underwriting, including at least five years of management experience.
• Exposure to both field and staff office operations preferred
• 5-10 years E&O Underwriting Experience
• Operations Experience
• Website development/management Experience
Skills:
• Demonstrated decision-making and strategic abilities
• Ability to drive for results, deal with ambiguity, communicate with upper management, and conceptualize strategic objectives
• Ability to lead staff, committees and project participants in all aspects of product/underwriting activities
• Strong Organizational Skills
• Strong internal and external communication skills
