We are one of the leading insurance companies in the United States.  Our superior financial strength and consistent record of strong operating returns mean security for our customers - and opportunities for our employees.  You will find Travelers to be full of energy and a workplace in which you truly can make a difference. We are currently looking for a Sr. Coverage Counsel.  Please read on for more details regarding this position. JOB DESCRIPTION: SUMMARY: Provides high quality, cost effective coverage advice and legal services to Claim, as well as Underwriting and other business units within Travelers.  Researches and prepares coverage opinions on a wide variety of issues and coverages.  Provides ongoing coverage advice to Claim.  May participate on behalf of the company in mediations, arbitrations, settlement conferences, and other alternative dispute resolution forums in coverage-related disputes.  Manages outside counsel on selected matters.   PRIMARY DUTIES: Completes coverage opinions, case updates, analysis and reports, litigation plans, case evaluations, legal research, and other required items in a timely manner.  Achieves desired results through effective analysis, legal research, advocacy and use of the litigation process.   Demonstrates excellent research and writing skills.  Provides thorough, accurate and timely analysis of coverage questions, policy forms, and other legal matters.   Collaborates and works effectively with others in the Claim Legal organization, and with Claim, Underwriting, and other areas of the company, to achieve results and to identify and resolve issues.  Communicates effectively with clients, exhibiting strong verbal and written communication skills  Provides legal updates to clients on case law and legislative developments.  Completes research and analysis for underwriting projects, and for special projects, providing a quality work product in a timely manner.  Achieves positive client feedback.  Has frequent independent contact with clients.  Provides prompt and appropriate communication to Claim and Underwriting clients.  Visits clients as appropriate to maintain relationships and provide advice and service.  Conducts training seminars as needed.  Acts as mentor and coach to less senior attorneys, paralegal/staff; explains issues, ideas and concepts that are incorporated into work assignments. Manages outside coverage counsel; reviews and approves invoices for outside counsel to ensure appropriateness and compliance with corporate retention agreement.   EXPERIENCE:Minimum 5 years of coverage experience required. EDUCATION/COURSE OF STUDY: JD Degree  CERTIFICATES/DEGREES:Admitted to the Bar  COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Strong and persuasive written and oral communication and presentation skills.  COMPUTER SKILLS:Strong PC skills including WORD.  OTHERDeveloping leadership skills; acts as an example in  mentoring others. Leadership: strong strategic thinker and decision-maker. Effectively uses resources to achieve results Organized; strong time management; able to multi-task Self-management: takes responsibility for decisions and actions; works well in teams; successfully handles multiple priorities which may be in conflict. Substantial technical knowledge of legal environment. Strong knowledge of property/casualty business, products and services. Clearly relates unit expectations and goals to the business unit mission. Sets challenging objectives and provides guidance and direction to staff. In addition to an exciting environment, we offer: * Competitive base salary with additional opportunities for variable pay through recognition programs and incentive awards * 401(k) with company match* Comprehensive health plans that include coverage for same sex/domestic partners* Strong work/family and employee assistance programs* Tuition reimbursement * Vacation Purchase Plan* Training/Development opportunities We are proud to provide comprehensive, high quality employee programs to meet employees' needs now and in the future, including a very competitive financial package.
