Datacenter Operations Manager

Responsibilities:

 

Completely track, coordinate and project manage all projects related to the following tasks to completion within company approved deadlines:

 

Data Center POP Build outs across tens of datacenters globally - Build racks for cages (work with data center vendor to purchase and build cabs to cage specs and server/device specs).Server/device deploy planning - plan for amount of servers/device that can fit within a group of racks based on size, power redundancy requirements, switch port requirements etc.. Order x-cross connects from various backbone providers and make sure they have been run to network cabs.Maintain current inventory documentation pertaining to all server/network devices including asset tagging.Coordinate DataCenter deployments with other departments in Operations and Development as needed.Be available to travel to anywhere at anytime on the globe that we need you to deploy servers into.Unpack, rack, and provide power and ping to all devices. Make sure devices can be reached remotely. 

Constant hardware monitoring for hardware failure and threshold breaches for any of the servers/devices across tens of data centers. Assign hardware failure repairs to staff and project manage the replacement of failed hardware with new hardware from vendor. Document failed hardware status reports weekly on progress. Staff must work with hardware vendor to diagnose and troubleshoot failed hardware so the vendor is convinced the part needs replacing. This must be done quickly as hardware replacement is urgent. Coordinate hardware turn up into production with other departments within Operations depending on which device hardware has failed.

Constant monitoring of power utilization across all server cabinets in all data centers for possible threshold breaches and for strategic planning of scaling cabinets with additional devices.Troubleshoot all data center type outages resulting from power loss or hardware failures.Use remote hands where appropriate, track and project manage all remote hands Document all issues and provide post mortem documentation after catastrophic events.

Skill set Requirements:

 

Must have at least three years data center work experience including the following responsibilities:Managing a team of Data Center technicians to get relevant Data Center work completed on time. Rack/Datacenter build outsServer and Device racking and cabling. Must have excellent cabling skills (Cat 5/6 and Fiber Multimode/Singlemode LS/LC) while maintaining the ability to cable neatly and creatively within constrained envinroments. Must have intimate understanding of both Fiber and Cat 5/6 cable. Must be able to provision a loop back cable from any LC/LC or LS/LS multi/single mode Fiber cable and custom provision ethernet cable (straight-through and cross-over) with crimpers and RJ-45 connecters. Understanding of how to translate amps to watts to kilowatts. Must be able to determine amp requirements based of voltage used.  Planning out power requirements and constraints for all servers and devices to be plugged into power circuits.Great organizational/documentation skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.Strong interpersonal skills used to communicate the urgency level required for each of our vendors to complete their tasks so we can complete ours within the approved deadlines.Strong shipping and receiving knowledge (we use UPS mostly but have been known to use other carriers as well).

Must have the following Hardware and Software skills:Strong knowledge of Dell and HP hardware. Must be able to build server hardware of any type with whatever hardware configurations are required. Must be extremely comfortable replacing CPU, RAM, Hard drives, and other miscellaneous components when needed. Strong knowledge of RAID configurations and the ability to determine what physical hard drive in a RAID Cluster has failed and needs to be replaced. Intermediate understanding of Router and Switch hardware. The ability to swap out managment modules and GBIC's for Cisco and Foundry hardware highly desired. Intermediate understanding of Microsoft Windows 2003 and Linux based Operating Systems to be able to help troubleshoot server issues when no remote access is available. Excellent documentation skills using Excel, Visio or other known documentation software to accurately portray datacenter design and implementation plans.

Leadership Skills:Organize, track and lead small groups of Data Center technicians including yourself to complete datacenter deployments and hardware failure replacements in a timely manner and reliable manner. Must be highly analytical and precision oriented to avoid common and uncommon pitfalls when deploying devices into a cage or cab. If your calculations are off by an inch or a watt it could mean hours of delay for the deployment. Data Center deployments are often high stress situations with many unknowns that can cause unlimited problems. You must be able to dyanmically deal with any type of situation as it comes at you and maintain a clear enough mind to find a solution to any potential showstopper.


The position is for our office in Los Angeles, California. We do not provide for relocation or telecommuting. All employees must be legally allowed to work in the United States and be able to produce all appropriate documentation for employment. Some travel may be required.
