Position Description:

Variety.com is looking for a new Director of Web Development. The Director of Web Development will have two central responsibilities: serving as a hands-on leader to our team of Web developers, and working with business owners and IT as the primary point of contact for advancement of the Web site and related products/tools. Responsibilities include:• Hands-on development of Variety web sites and related products/tools• Lead and manage a team of Web developers implementing updates and additions to Variety web sites and related products/tools• Troubleshoot site issues and work with team to resolve problems in a timely manner• Collaborate with the IT team to define optimal technology solutions and processes for constructing web applications• Partner with various business owners from editorial, sales, marketing and product management to ensure the successful launch of short and long term initiatives• Act as a product development liaison with various business owners as new products and features take shape• Ensure exceptional quality and usability of all web sites, while optimizing performance and scalability• Develop standards and document best practices as it relates to the web site and related work flows• Conduct research into current and emerging Web technologies and issues in support of on-line initiatives; identify influencing industry developments and trends; present recommendations to management in clear and concise mannerThe ideal candidate will have a combination of extensive technical Web development experience, solid project management chops and past responsibility for managing a team. He/She should be up-to-date on the best practices related to Web site development and content management systems. A strong set of communication skills is also essential, as the Director of Web Development will work closely with every department in the company. We are seeking an individual with strong problem solving skills with the ability to work at management level, but willingness and acumen to provide hands-on support when necessary. Additionally, it’s important that the individual have a solid understanding of site architecture, client-server technologies, applications development and multi-vendor environments; experience with the creation and use of Web Services a plus.Additional requirements include:• BS, ideally in computer science, or equivalent experience • Minimum of 6 years of Internet development experience • Minimum of 2 years experience in managing technical professionals• In-depth knowledge of front end web development, including the use of HTML, CSS, Javascript and Flash • Expertise in dynamic web page development using JSP, ASP or PHP and relational databases• Sound understanding of content management systems • Experience with RSS, XML, AJAX, ActionScript, stored procedures and .Net technologies (especially VB) a plusApply online at: www.reedbusiness.apply2jobs.com and reference job ID# 303049.
