Our team of technical developers and user interface designers works on a range of core internal applications and sites. Specifically, we design and build central intranet resources and templates, identify opportunities to create new tools for Google employees and partner with employees across the company. We're dedicated to improving our colleagues' productivity and their access to internal information, as our intranet is the ultimate repository of all of the shared knowledge that enables Google products to come into existence.The role: Interaction Designer, Internal Projects Do you like tackling complex information and application design problems? Do you prefer to experience the full spectrum of design tasks (conceptualization, user research, information architecture, interaction design, visual design, mockup development) rather than working on only one? Want to observe the impact of your designs first-hand?Join Google's intranet development team and be part of the application design process from inception to implementation. See your users up close and personal. Your work will improve the productivity and happiness of your fellow Googlers on a daily basis, as Google's ever-growing intranet is the ultimate repository of all of the information that enables Google products to come into existence.As an internal designer, you'll work on a wide variety of projects, from critical applications used across the entire company to informational sites tailored to the needs of individual product teams. You'll be involved throughout the process, including brainstorming about what projects we should take on, interviewing users and fleshing out requirements, designing and mocking up alternatives, conducting user testing, and consulting throughout implementation. You'll also have an opportunity to give feedback on dozens of projects beyond your own. Because Google makes a habit of using the same products internally that we release for enterprise use, your role may also influence products such as the Google Search Appliance and Google Apps for Your Domain.Demonstrated portfolio of work required.Responsibilities:Researching user needs and requirements, and identifying areas where constructive changes can have maximum impact. User interaction design for complex Web applications: analysis of workflow, creation of mockups and prototypes, design consultations. Lightweight user testing. Development and maintenance of Web pages; design and implementation of basic page templates. Fielding requests from and providing support to internal users around the world.Qualifications:Minimum 3 years of experience in Web design and/or information architecture, including work on large or complex sites or applications. Expertise in designing clean, intuitive interfaces and knowledge of current best practices; visual design skills and graphics software knowledge a plus. Demonstrated portfolio of work required. Expert HTML and CSS skills, with cross-browser, cross-platform compatibility; familiarity with basic scripting, particularly Javascript and/or PHP. Ability to work with and organize large volumes of content; attention to detail. Ability to drive projects from start to finish with minimal supervision and to juggle multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
