IP Network Engineer

Cogent’s facilities-based all-optical end-to-end IP network enables 100 Mbps connectivity, a rate that is about 100 times faster than observed T1 capacity (or 65 times faster than the published rate of 1.544 Mbps).

Cogent’s network consists of a dedicated 80 Gigabit nationwide fiber optic backbone, intra-city fiber rings and optically-interfaced high-speed routers. This highly efficient network enables Cogent to not only provide customers with unheard of pricing, but it also enables Cogent to protect customer connections at the data level (Layer 3) where every packet of data is protected and routed to its final destination.

Cogent is looking for an IP Network Engineer to be based out of our Washington DC Headquarters. As part of a small, skilled, and highly motivated team, this person will be responsible for overall integrity of IP network infrastructure consisting of 2000+ devices. You will actively participate in architectural issues and produce both high level and detailed documentation and provide high-level training for NOC and Customer Service teams. You will also assist with the management of IP address space and implementation of network equipment and services. This position involves participation in an on-call rotation and providing third level technical support for escalated customer issues as well as supporting the Sales Engineers on an ad hoc basis.Skills/Abilities:

 In-depth knowledge of TCP/IP fundamentalsExpert level hands-on experience with Bridging, Switching, Routing, Ethernet and TDM/SONET/SDH Transport Architectures Including: Ethernet (10/100/1000/10000) technologies, Routers and Switches, Spanning Tree, OSPF, IS-IS, BGP, MPLS-TE, and EoMPLSExcellent verbal and written communications skills Comfortable working in a fast-paced, goal and team-oriented environment. Ability to manage multiple projects, under tight deadlines, often with competing priorities and complexities and with minimal supervision Ability to perform problem isolation and troubleshooting in complex environments Ability to adjust plans as necessary and provide alternative strategies to meet changing business needs Ability to understand new technologies Must be detail oriented & highly motivated.Working knowledge of MS Windows (2000 and XP)Working knowledge of Unix OS (both BSD/SysV) applications Experience and flexibility regarding on-call responsibilitiesProgramming/Scripting in Bourne shell and Perl a plus

 Network design, planning, testing, implementation and assistance in the maintenance of all routers, switches and transport equipment to ensure optimum performance at all times. As part of the team, design, implement, configure and maintain the network circuit redundancy via layer 2 switching and/or layer 3 routing to minimize network downtime. 3rd tier technical support for Customer Support and NOC Support Sales engineers on an ad hoc basis Develop appropriate standards and practices and ensure that they are documented, maintained and applied to all projects and services. Identify, acquire and/or train Operations on the introduction of new processes, techniques, and technologies as necessary in support of new services or service features. Write procedures for the NOC to handle common tasks. Coordinate with network equipment vendors to ensure current hardware and software features. Participate in the "on call" pager rotation with other members of the team. Perform other duties as requested by supervisor. Education/Training/Qualifications:

 Six years Operations and/or Network engineering in an ISP environment Significant experience with large scale and complex projects. Candidate must possess a high-level of technical expertise, have strong organizational skills and be able to learn and define technical processes and procedures.
