OSS Web Developer

Position Description: Under direction of the Manager, OSS Web Services and/or direction of the Director of OSS Services, the OSS Web Developer is responsible for the development of the OSS Service Performance Portal.  Development will be guided through frequent interaction with the portal user community, SME’s/technical experts, immediate and executive management, and other potential interested internal parties. 

 

MAJOR DUTIES:
• Participate in the design, deployment and support of web based and open source technologies to obtain relevant fault and performance information from service and network infrastructure, improve system performance; plan and design new/upgraded/replacement system components; conduct regular testing and analysis of critical OSS software and facilities to ensure proper operation.
• Provide the Service Desks, Local Management Centers, Business Units, and management with timely fault and performance data to enable them to effectively manage the entire  National IP Services Information Technology infrastructure.
• Work closely with Application and Network Engineering teams to design and deploy appropriate monitoring technologies including custom scripts and other techniques as appropriate
• Participate in the analysis of existing network management systems integration and technologies; plan and design new or upgraded OSS Tools software and hardware systems; analysis of specific system elements, such as system software and processes, with recommendations for appropriate changes.

EDUCATION (Preferred):
• A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, a related discipline, or relevant experience.

EXPERIENCE:
• Four to six years in the Telecommunications or Network/System Engineering field.
• Network analysis/design experience with several OSS methodologies (e.g., SNMP, MIB, TMN, etc.)
• Strong interpersonal and communications skills; capable of writing recommendations, RFP’s, and interacting with company personnel on complex topics; making presentations to an internal audience and interacting positively with senior management.
• Must have strong, independent problem solving skills and be self-directed.

·  Must have the ability to extract development requirements (relevant to guiding design principles for the project) through customer interaction and proactively scope work, self assign, and execute; independently.

 

TECHNICAL SKILLS:
• Specialist in LAMP and Open Source technologies.  Linux, Apache/Tomcat, MySQL, PHP/PERL. 

·  One to two years experience with scripting in a UNIX environment (Perl, Awk, SED, etc.)
• Must have strong Unix Administration skills (Linux preferred).

• Familiarity with telecom networking protocols (e.g., SS7, CAS, MF, DTMF, etc.)
• Experience with several OSS tools, e.g., NetCool, Spectrum, Visionael, Impact, HP OpenView, Concord, Auspice, etc. – is helpful, but not required.
• Should have relevant experience designing, deploying and supporting at least one of the following: NetCool, Concord, Spectrum, Auspice
• Must have experience monitoring Servers, Applications and Databases for fault and performance anomalies
• Must have experience working with OSS application vendors, or experience working in a development environment accustom to; identify and resolve issues, test and install patches, perform beta testing and document/communicate product enhancement requests
• Must have a general understanding of TCP/IP, especially the utilization of UDP socket design and implementation, in a large LAN/WAN environment.
