Intellectual Property Manager

The Washington, D.C. office of Baker Hostetler LLP has an immediate opening for an Intellectual Property Manager. The main responsibilities are:
· Manage and lead overall operations of the Intellectual Property (IP) practice of the D.C. office.
· Manage workload distribution among the IP support staff, including annuity/maintenance fee specialists, docketing, foreign filing, secretaries and paralegals.
· Define, establish and maintain effective support systems and services and develop and implement industry best practice standards for patent and trademark procurement worldwide.
· Define, establish and administer quality control standards.
· Develop organizational and business goals, including business management of strategic goals; establish administrative solutions to business and organizational goals.
· Review policies and procedures in conjunction with Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) rule changes worldwide to ensure timely update of internal electronic systems/databases.
· Work with new client intake, firmwide conflicts and records departments.
· Work with IS department regarding existing and proposed software packages and vendor agreements.
· Work with Human Resources in consistent and seamless delivery of human resource services, including participation in staff performance evaluation process and staff recruiting.
· Monitor attendance and timecards of IP staff, including approval of leave requests; manage overtime.
· Conduct staff orientation and training to enhance the development of knowledge, skills and abilities of IP support team members.
Requirements:
· Three to five (3-5) years progressively responsible work experience in managing operations supporting an IP practice, including billing (Elite), computerized docketing (CPi preferred), database management and file audits, in a mid-sized or large law firm, corporate IP department, or other professional service business.
· Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
· Excellent interpersonal skills necessary to communicate in person, by e-mail and telephone with a diverse group of attorneys, staff, vendors and clients to provide information with ordinary courtesy and tact.
· Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
· Proven ability to identify and analyze issues and problems in client service (internal and external), human resources, and process operations, and to recommend and implement solutions.
· Proven ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions and/or implement best practice standards and quality assurance controls.
· Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals and to effectively present information and respond to questions from all levels of professional staff, managers, supervisors, support staff and clients.
· Proven organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple, high-priority tasks, exercise judgment and appropriate discretion.
· Aptitude for detail and accuracy and comfort with team support environment.
· Proficient in use of Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, database applications and Intranet/Internet searching.
· Demonstrated working knowledge of patent and trademark rules worldwide as well as strong database management and troubleshooting skills.
