Assistant Product Engineer - Intern

NATIONAL PEN is a leading global direct marketer of business-to-business promotional products.  The Company manufactures or imports business related promotional and gift products such as writing instruments, desk accessories, wearables, calendars, and drinkwear that are then customized with a customer’s name, address, logo etc., using traditional laser engraving, silk screening or its proprietary technology for high speed digital image printing.  National Pen primarily targets small businesses in the US and selected international markets and has manufacturing facilities in the US, Mexico and Ireland.  The Company also has a retail division that sells similar products into retailers with logos or licensed designs.

 

Position Summary:

The Assistant Product Engineer takes Marketing concepts … interacts with Supply Chain and / or Manufacturing … then offers options and recommendations back to Marketing indicating optimal product characteristics, vendors selected or internal manufacturing process, specifications and costs. 

 

The Assistant Product Engineer supports the PE (Product Engineer) by conducting analysis related to the overall engineering and development process.  A primary objective, of this position, concerns the tracking and reporting of introduction / development status.

 

Intern will receive education and experience in the Product Engineer and development process.

 

Minimum time requirement 20 hours per week

Maximum time requirement 30 hours per week

 

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 Product introduction and development status / tracking -  using existing tracking and spreadsheet applications, the assistant PE will conduct weekly tracking and reporting of product progress through the “SKU Launch Process”.Specifications – as directed by the PE or Director, the assistant PE will fill out specifications consistent with current processes.AD HOC Analysis - as requested by PE or Director.

 

 



 

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIESInteraction with Marketing – Assists PE or Director in coordinating with the Marketing Product Managers to understand potential product concepts.  After review and analysis with Supply Chain / Manufacturing, the PE is responsible for presenting options for realization of the resulting product.Product Related Research & Development – assists the PE in R&D related to the development of new products or refinement of existing product design.  This includes formulation of cost benefit analysis (CBA) indicating investment requirements as well as benefits potential.Sepcs / Costs / BOM – Assists the assigned PEs with specifications, overall product cost and bill of material (BOM) formulation (conducted through bill writers or other assigned individuals).  These elements will be available at the time of Marketing product selection / approval.Analysis and Recommendation for Product (or related process) Improvement – assists the PE with continuous improvement analysis and recommendations.  The focus is on cost / quality / service enhancements that satisfy Marketing strategies

 

Education/Experience:

 Enrolled in applicable college program (IE, Industrial Engineer or other) – required. Strong analytic and spreadsheet skills. Oral and written communications skills. Must be able to perform in a team environment.
