The Shelby Fiber Glass Science & Technology Center is located within an hour of downtown Charlotte, NC. An industry recognized expert is required to develop innovative solutions for new composite applications. This position is part of a science and technology organization for a leading fiber glass producer. The job involves design, analysis and testing of high performance composite structures with emphasis on ballistic and blast resistant structures as well as large functional composite parts. Areas of expertise will include structural analysis, laminate design, testing of composites, composite applications and composite processing. U.S. Citizenship is required. ? Conduct research leading to improvement in composite ballistic performance. ? Utilize composite design and analysis expertise to develop new composite applications and for the pursuit of downstream opportunities. ? Characterize composite performance for wind energy applications leading to improved composite materials/processing and innovative composite technology. ? Improve predictive testing of composite materials. Initiate innovative technical concepts, develop these concepts into business sanctioned projects and commercialize technology to produce quantifiable business impact. ? Direct/Supervise lab technicians as required. ? Seek external funding for research through submission of white papers and grant proposals. ? Develop a network of external collaborators to help identify newly emerging growth opportunities for composites. ? Provide technical expertise to customers. ? Improve applications lab capabilities for processing of composite materials. ? Work with PPG?s S&T community to utilize new technologies from PPG?s other business units to provide better solutions.

Successful candidate must have a minimum of 5 years work experience in the composites industry. Preferably with hands on experience with composite processing especially resin infusion. Additionally, experience in the areas of laminate design and structural analysis, or experience with ballistic testing and design of composites to optimize ballistic performance are preferred. Other skills that are key preference areas include experience with mechanical property testing of composite materials; ability to correlate predictive lab material testing with composite performance; fatigue testing of composites and analysis of fatigue data; and failure analysis of composites.

Candidates with an MS or PhD in Composite Engineering, Material Science or Mechanical Engineering; Thesis concentration in composites, will be considered.

Excellent communication skills with a track record of successful implementations are mandatory.
