Job Description:SUMMARY OF POSITION:The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist is responsible for the promotion of a safe and healthy work environment. To promote continuous improvement of safety and health systems that results in the reduction of accidents and illness, and assures regulatory compliance. To develop and direct the implementation of safety programs and to assure management takes the actions needed to raise employee awareness of risks and to reduce, avoid, and protect employees from hazards in the workplace, including occupational illness or disease. To maintain compliance to environmental, safety, and governmental regulations by identifying and analyzing problems, finalizing suggestions and recommendations for improvements. To jointly oversee worker’s compensation, occupational safety and related programs to the conformance of company philosophies and business objectives. KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Maintains current knowledge of industry trends and practices. Provides training support and research with timely, accurate and effective delivery to meet objectives. Identifies safety and health hazards inherent in the organization’s operations, and establishes guidelines for protection from those hazards. Ensures compliance with federal, state and plant standards through observation of employee conduct and physical conditions. Performs periodic environmental and safety inspection audits of the facility and initiates corrective action to reduce costs and injuries and provide a safe working environment. Monitors performance reports for trends and conditions and alerts management to problems. Investigates and establishes standards for protective equipment. Investigates all accidents, near misses or problem areas and recommends future preventive measures including alternative methods or fixtures to alleviate hazards. Coordinates emergency response operations including medical, chemical, fire and evacuation/rescue, designating responders, training, and scheduling drills. Coordinates with outside groups such as city offices and acquiring emergency response equipment and vehicles for providing training, equipment operation and administering safety programs including: forklifts and cranes. Coordinates programs and must obtain and maintain certifications designed to promote, test and ensure worker safety. Works in conjunction with Human Resources in overseeing the administration of workers’ compensation program, including working with our insurance carrier to cut down on employee lost time and claims. Compiles and submits reports required by company management, regulatory agencies and insurance companies. Participates in all federal, state, and corporate investigations and inspections. Prepares material and evidence for use in hearings, law suits, and insurance investigations. Consults with all departments on design and use of equipment. Reviews programs for effectiveness and recommends changes. Represents the organization in community or industry safety groups and programs. Knowledge and routine application/enforcement of all company, federal and state safety and environmental rules and laws. Establishes facility training procedures and provides training support to employees. Manages and performs required testing and permitting. Supports and/or facilitates Safety Committee meetings. Keeps work place clean, neat and organized. The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by employees in this position. Organizational skills. Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) helpful Emergency Response and First Aid/CPR training and experience preferred. Proficiency in computers including Microsoft Office Suite products. Ability to work with spreadsheets, databases, and presentation software. Strong inter-personal skills including demonstrable communication skills both verbal and written. Ability to read, write, speak and comprehend EnglishJOB REQUIREMENTS: Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements. Passing a post-offer/pre-employment physical exam including drug and alcohol screening at the employer’s expense is required and is a condition of employment.
