National Pen is a leading global direct marketer of business-to-business promotional products.  The Company manufactures or imports business related promotional and gift products such as writing instruments, desk accessories, wearables, calendars, and drinkwear that are then customized with a customer’s name, address, logo etc., using traditional laser engraving, silk screening or its proprietary technology for high speed digital image printing.  National Pen primarily targets small businesses in the US and selected international markets and has manufacturing facilities in the US, Mexico and Ireland.  The Company also has a retail division that sells similar products into retailers with logos or licensed designs.

 

National Pen is owned by a private investment company with a diversified portfolio of highly successful companies.  The Owner has a long-term buy and hold investment philosophy that allows its operating companies to focus on long term value creation.

 

Position Description

 

National Pen is in need of a detail oriented, “roll up your sleeves” financial professional who will be responsible for leading the financial affairs of the company.  The CFO will be located in a suburb of San Diego, California and will report to the Chief Executive Officer of the Company.  The CFO is responsible for leading and managing a group of approximately 75 finance employees in five locations, both domestic and international.

 

It is critical that the CFO have outstanding leadership and analytical skills and act as a catalyst to forge efficient and profitable growth.  The major goals of this position are provide action oriented financial reporting and analysis to the senior management of the company in order to meet the overall goals of profitability and cash flow.  It is critical that this person be a committed individual who can operate at the strategic business level with the senior management team but can also provide detailed and timely analysis and support for the day to day operations of the business.

 

Responsibilities & Accountabilities

 Formulates and administers financial policies and procedures for an autonomous operating company including the establishment and maintenance of fiscal controls and safeguarding the Company’s assets.  Key member of Executive Team who proactively advises senior management on key business drivers.Provides overall direction to general accounting, cost accounting, financial planning, budgeting and credit functions.

 Reports on financial affairs of company to Board of Directors.  Recruit, train, direct and manage financial team capable of administering the accounting and finance control functions, as well as capable of providing consistent, reliable P&L and cash forecasts.  Primary liaison with Parent Financial Staff.

 Oversees preparation of annual budgets, quarterly re-forecasts, and 3-year plans.Oversees the Monthly Financial Close, Annual Financial Audit, Company Incentive Compensation programs, and Internal Audits.Responsible for strategic and financial analysis, due diligence and integration of bolt-on acquisitions to ensure financial objectives of acquisition are achieved.

 

Requirements

 CPA (MBA preferred) with at least 15 years of experience in operating finance/accounting functions, including at least 5 years of Previous CFO experience within a medium sized company ($100 Million to $250 Million).  Experience in International Operations is a plus.  Must be well-versed in all Microsoft Office Suite programs, experience with Oracle is a plus.Excellent interpersonal, leadership and communications skills.  Person must be able to multi-task and to work well under pressure in a fast paced environment.  Comfortable with dual reporting relationships to Executive Management of the Company and to the Parent Finance Group and Board.

 Detail oriented, hands-on manager with solid financial training and experience in developing and implementing financial processes and appropriate controls within a global, high growth, entrepreneurial environment.
