Material Handling Engineer

Position Objective:
The objective of this position is to identify, justify and implement material handling strategies in support of the manufacturing operation of Bucyrus International, Inc. to improve Safety, Quality, Speed, Delivery and Morale.

Job Functions:

1. The Key Deliverable of this position is the identification, justification and implementation of material handling equipment and processes that improve safety, quality and profitability of Bucyrus International, Inc. This position shall be responsible for identifying opportunities to improve existing material handling equipment in support of the fabrication, welding, assembly, and machining processes utilizing new and existing technologies and eliminating non-value added steps.


2. Work with peers to cost justify, procure and implement new strategies identified above leading to standardized implementation of these new technologies and processes.


3. Work with outside suppliers and consultants to improve the safety, timeliness and cost of handling large weldments and components within the manufacturing arena.


4. Become a support resource to other functional areas in improving the value chain from receiving through final shipment. This includes material movement between warehousing, the shop and processing.


5. Maintain a customer focus in improving the value stream of parts and processes within Bucyrus International, Inc.'s operation utilizing the tools and principles of the Bucyrus Production System (BPS).


6. Improve the operational effectiveness of Bucyrus International Inc. by focusing on the following:
a. Revenue Growth
b. Cost Reduction
c. Safety Improvement
d. Quality Improvement


7. Performs other duties and assumes accountabilities as apparent or as delegated, including mutually agreed upon objectives.

Relationship to Others:

This position reports into the Manager of Advanced Manufacturing Engineering. Peers under the Manager include Manufacturing Engineers, Programmers, and Industrial Engineers. This position will closely interface with all functional areas of the organization including Manufacturing, Production Control, Design Engineering, Safety, Quality and Purchasing. This position will frequently interact with personnel from mid level to plant floor personnel. In addition, this position will have frequent outside contact with vendors, contractors and consultants.


Dimensions of Position:

This position will be a staff level position, responsible for doing capital justification of large scale capital projects. This position will interface with other Engineering organizations within Bucyrus International Inc.'s South Milwaukee complex.

Education and Experience:
The incumbent for this position will possess a Bachelor Degree in Engineering with emphasis in one of the Manufacturing disciplines preferred. Ideal candidate will have a Graduate degree in Engineering or Business.

Relevant Business Experience:

- Two to Five years of experience identifying material handling requirements for large components (above 50 ton).
- Manufacturing experience from a company whose product is highly engineered and built to suit.
- Has been a champion of continuous improvement in material handling equipment and practices.
- General advanced manufacturing experience with the following:
o Process Standardization
o Material Flow Analysis
o Interface with Manufacturing Automation
o Facility Planning
o Capital Planning and Justification
o Value Stream Mapping
- Leads by example and collaborates well.
- Is strongly focused on important end results; sets objectives which are clearly defined for self and others; gets results consistently over time; avoids peripheral actions that deflect attention from key priorities.
- Demonstrates the ability to satisfy both internal and external customers.

Special Position Requirements:

This position will have less than 10% travel, depending upon projects and business conditions. It is anticipated that travel requirements could vary depending upon current projects. Because of the International nature of the business, this could include foreign travel.

Work Requirements:

This job requires a minimum of lifting. Some work on the shop floor may be required at times.
Working toward a technical degree with 5 years of related experience.
