Metallurgical/Materials Development Engineer

Position requires minimum 5 years of experience in materials development, Tribiology characterization, selection, design, processing and joining experience with IC engines or other compression devices. • Work as a team member to provide corporate-wide support for new technology development projects, new product development projects, and cost improvement programs that involve design and application of materials and components for Heating, Ventilation & Air-conditioning (HVAC) compressors and systems. • Manage, direct, and implement development of new wear resistant materials, wear resistant coatings, and processes based on the application and development fundamental research. Must interface with customers, vendors, and universities in joint development activities. • Manage analysis of competitive materials technologies used in products for compressors and develop implementation strategies for new materials incorporation. • Position requires part design responsibility, taking into consideration process, tooling, and material limitations. Work closely with manufacturing, supply chain management, and suppliers to develop tooling and components. • Use appropriate analytical and test methods in designing and selecting materials and processes to ensure that product meets or exceeds customer's requirements. Candidates should have experience with standard and advanced metallurgical testing techniques. • Identify components where metals and metal processes are commonly applied in Trane products and design and implement reduce weight, reduce cost, integrate parts, improve reliability, or simplify the manufacturing and assembly process. • Support general efforts regarding manufacturability, standardization, field problem resolution, service parts, and technical assistance in metallurgical area. • Lead and participate in projects using Six Sigma tools. • Less than 10% travel required. • BS, MS, or PhD in metallurgical or materials engineering required. • Minimum 5 years of experience required. • Good understanding of New Product Development cycle is required. • English speaking/reading/writing skills required. • Interest or experience in project leadership required. • Strong interpersonal skills, experience in project leadership, and orientation in team concepts are essential for success in this position. • Applicants must be capable of independent supervision and should have working knowledge of AutoCad and Microsoft Office. • Must be proficient in problem solving. • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required. • Six Sigma problem solving certification or familiarity desired. • Computer literacy and ability to operate generally accepted software programs required.
