Non Destructive Evaluation Engineer

Cirrus Design Corporation, a general aviation industry leader and manufacturer of the SR20 and SR22 composite aircraft, continues to expand its talented engineering staff for new product development.  Cirrus employs approximately 1200 employees with corporate headquarters in Duluth, MN located on the scenic shores of Lake Superior.

 

Job Summary:  Responsible for selection, evaluation, and validation of nondestructive methods of inspection for aircraft components. NDE Engineer will work in a multidisciplinary team to integrate Design and Stress Analysis / Materials and Processes / Destructive Testing and Failure Analysis, and Product Assurance.  NDE Engineer should have familiarity with a wide variety of different NDE techniques and their applications and should posses sound skills in Physics and Electronics.  Experience with automated data collection systems is desired and strong computer skills are required.  Experience with phased array UT is desired.  NDE Engineer will develop specialized techniques to meet unique requirements using various inspection methods and validate/qualify NDE techniques and procedures using engineering judgment. NDE Engineer will develop calibration standards and evaluate the detectability limits of various equipment.  NDE Engineer will integrate technology into manufacturing line and be able to work effectively with outside manufacturers and equipment vendors to develop customized NDE units.  Duties include quantitative nondestructive evaluation (QNDE); validation, screening, and selection of NDE methods; Probability of Detection (POD); qualify new NDE technology and develop NDE procedures; create process specifications; develop process flow, labor, and equipment cost models for inspection process studies. 

 

Qualifications:  Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Physics, Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering. Knowledge of ultrasonic, acoustic, X-ray, thermography, or other NDE methods is required. Minimum of one year experience in the following (aerospace experience preferred): NDE, Composites materials and manufacturing technology, composites manufacturing R&D, Non-metallic Materials & Process Engineering, and/or composite product/process development fields, implementing NDE methods in a rate driven production environment, and supporting the preparation and execution of detailed project plans (tasks, schedule, and budget), and effectively communicate the status and results of project developments.  Ability to work in an aggressive team environment, demonstrating exceptional communication skills on technical issues.  Demonstrated ability to participate in the development and implementation of design and manufacturing concepts, specialized equipment, production-ready manufacturing processes and all related software.  Hands-on experience with composite lay-up (hand and/or automated methods), tooling methods, production procedures, composite material types/forms, and engineering requirements to evaluate and enhance processes, products, and materials
