Plasma Process Engineer I - Manual

The Plasma Process Engineer (PPE) is responsible for developing new cutting processes and technologies. An emphasis on the technological development of the state of the art in plasma cutting is fundamental to this position, with expected creation of new intellectual property. This includes the design and development of torches and consumables, along with direct participation on a cross-functional team in the development of new plasma arc cutting systems. Development is completed using the sophisticated application of experimental, analytical, and computational methods. Interaction with other engineering disciplines (electrical, software, etc.) and the manufacturing organization is integral to this role. The PPE is also responsible for directing the day to day activities of lab technicians and in some cases will take the lead of small product development teams. Mechanical design using solid-model CAD and DFM practices Development of new consumable geometries and gas flows for cutting metal Design of Industrial Experiments (DOE) CFD and thermal modeling Supervision and conduction of experimental lab testing and validation including hands-on work. Collection, analysis, and reporting of laboratory data. Active leadership and development of lab technicians. Hands-on experimental lab experience and knowledge of design of experiments. Minitab-based DOE preferred. Familiarity with basic laboratory instrumentation including oscilloscopes, data acquisition systems, flow, pressure, and temperature measurement systems. Training in applied physics or mechanical engineering with emphasis on heat transfer and fluid dynamics required. Computer skills, such as word processing, spreadsheet, database and project management software required Knowledge of the thermal cutting technologies including laser, plasma, and oxyfuel gas cutting desirable. Knowledge of thermal cutting industry including key competitors’ business models, technologies, and i.p. desirable. Excellent oral and written communication skills Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work across boundaries. MS in Mechanical Engineering with 2-4 years of product development experience preferred. BS in Mechanical Engineering with emphasis on fluid dynamics and heat transfer required.
