SUMMARY OF POSITION: This positions functions in the Design Engineering Department with employees where the emphasis is on product design. Product design functions include feasibility studies, technical specifications, developing concepts, selecting materials, design calculations, making prototypes, reliability testing, and release of all engineering documents relating to product design. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES: 1. Serve as the project administrator for assigned development projects. Includes program planning, development and implementation. 2. Evaluate customer specifications and provide Engineering estimates for inquiries. 3. Provide problem resolution to manufacturing regarding specification interpretations. 4. Identify, select and operate lab equipment for the Engineering Lab. Advise the factory on technical matters concerning equipment selection and procurement. 5. Prepares, changes or checks Engineering documents for release. 6. Perform requested Ticket Engineering requirements from Marketing Department. 7. Generates ideas for Cost Improvement. 8. Develops, plans, and implements new product development activities in accordance with fiscal Division plans. 9. Investigates and solves problems related to the manufacture of molded products in a timely manner. 10. Perform other activities as directed by the Product Manager. NATURE AND SCOPE: This position reports to the Product Manager and independently develops and directs a broad range of product design projects and engineering process improvements. The incumbent assumes responsibility of all technical project activities including the execution of high-level product design elements. The incumbent directs teams, committees and ad hoc groups assembled to address design, quality, safety and manufacturability issues. Nearly half of the design effort is for government contracts, which are specification and testing intensive. The incumbent is required to devote 50% of time acting as a resource to other departments and customers. Various other obligations of this position include cost improvements, patent disclosures, and occasional travel in support of design activities. Skills include advanced design elements, engineered material selection, design costing, project management, team coordination, technical report writing, computer assisted drafting (CAD), and personal computer spreadsheet and work processor knowledge. EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: This position requires BS in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, plus senior engineering level experience in a manufacturing environment. Strong knowledge of tooling, production, and quality control are required, as well as product design experience. Project management and proposal experience is also helpful. Significant experience in military and/or aerospace products, as well as industrial grade products is required. Computer proficiency with AutoCAD and office software, plus sound oral and written communication skills is also strongly preferred.
