R&D Food Scientist

Position Summary:  MORNINGSTAR FOODS, a division of the DEAN FOODS family, is looking for a Food Scientist to work out of the company’s Kohler Mix Specialties, White Bear Lake, MN location. This role of this position is to provide analytical services to the division and/or conducts analytical research.  As a member of the R&D team or on an individual assignment this individual leads projects or portions of projects and documents results for review by management.  Under supervision, performs technical assignments and develops innovative approaches for achieving specific objectives within the framework of a project.  Provides technical advice to others within specialty.  Contributes to the preparation of technical proposals, amendments, reports and terminations.  Work is frequently performed in the pilot plant utilizing equipment and scientific instrumentation.   Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  Monitor new product/test product plant trials.  Evaluate and test finished products, raw ingredients, packaging, equipment, experimental samples.  Document data.  Assist in implementation in plant for production runs. Develop or improve existing products through entire R&D process; bench top testing, pilot plant, production runs.  Documents results. Interact with other departments in the development process; includes production, sales, accounting, purchasing, production. Assist in/train company employees on proper use of equipment and procedures. Stays informed about new trends in the dairy industry. Stays informed of new trends in ingredient and equipment technologies. Assure all products meet regulatory and company quality standards. Assists/runs lab equipment in the pilot plant and ice cream machines for product testing. QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS:   BS in Food Science or a related discipline; Master’s preferred. 5 years experience in food industry; dairy industry desirable; ice cream industry highly desirable. Familiar with lab procedures, such a as dairy lab quality assurance testing; proper use and care of laboratory testing and analysis equipment. Excellent oral/written communications skills Capable of using MS Office Suite including Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Physically capable of running process equipment in a Pilot Plant.
