Scope of Position:
This position involves decision making and technical representation for the FDM group at Design Reviews, PPA's, technical summits, as well as the everyday design issues that are common within the department. The individual must be capable of identifying and evaluating all options for solving complex technical issues, and thoroughly supporting his/her technical solution within the boundaries of the Fusion Draw Machine which is bound by the glass inlet section to the Bottom of Draw section. This individual has the strongest technical voice regarding regular design changes, resolving operational issues, and future enhancements to the system.
Day to Day Responsibilities include; attending and hosting design reviews, reporting to supervision of trends, decisions, and test results; interacting with all operation sites and our Science and Technology Division, providing daily technical guidance to peers, and evaluating the viability of all incoming design changes.
Travel Requirements:
* 10-25% combined local, national and international
Hours of work/work schedule/flextime:
* 40 hr. per week
Required Skills:
1. BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering required and 10-15 years related experience in a manufacturing environment.
2. The required level of experience specific to Corning's glassmaking process is 10-15 years. During this period, acceptable roles include Process Engineer, Hardware Design Engineer, Manufacturing Engineer, Rebuild Engineer and Engineering Supervisor.
3. Desired skills include prototyping, familiarity with materials science, all basic machine tools and metal and ceramic fabrication processes.
The minimum required skills include:
1. Mechanical (static and dynamic) analysis, thermal and fluid analysis, knowledge of Solidworks Modeling and FEA packages, the ability to evaluate engineering issues, and prioritize them according to productivity, safety, flexibility, and reliability. Creative thinking and openness to nonstandard designs and materials is critical to the advancement of the system and the productivity of the division.
Soft Skills:
1. Objectivity and fairness in evaluating technical options.
2. Identification of and respect for stakeholders.
3. Indifference regarding origin of solution (humility). A general disconcern for one's own ideas, in favor of a genuine interest in finding the best solution, is extremely important.
4. Compassion and fairness in presenting solutions and the ability to build a healthy rapport are likewise critical in this role.
