MAJOR PURPOSE OF POSITION
To help insure product structural integrity by employing state-of-the-art analysis; maintain state-of-the-art knowledge in subjects such as test, fatigue, fracture mechanics, finite element methods and materials - to aid in the development of better analysis methods.
JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Implement efficient structural design concepts by consulting with the product groups and determining the best design alternatives. The main thrust here will be design reliability and simplification.
2. Implement appropriate structural analysis techniques by offering the optimum analysis method. Method could include consideration of (e.g.) classical or finite element stress analysis, fatigue or fracture mechanics, vibration, test signal analysis or statistics.
3. Develop and perform state-of-the-art analysis as defined by senior members of analysis group or requested by the product design group.
4. Improve state-of-the-art analysis and test capabilities by involvement with academic bodies that are engaged in structural activities.
ADDITIONAL JOB REQUIREMENTS
ORGANIZING AND PLANNING
Must be able to organize and plan an optimal technological and manpower approach to major hardware and software projects.
COMMUNICATION
Must be able to exchange technical information with Product, Analysis, secretarial and Management group personnel.
COOPERATION
Must cooperate with engineering and manufacturing to provide assistance which will support their needs.
DEVELOPMENT OF OTHERS
Help train product group personnel in good structural design and analysis procedures by consultation and formal training sessions. Help train analysis group personnel in areas of expertise mentioned in "Knowledge Requirement".
PRINCIPAL CHALLENGES
The principal challenge is the development of product design simplification skills blended with product reliability concepts.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor of Science in Engineering. Expertise in at least 3 of the following subjects, as indicated by graduate courses or equivalent experience: (1) Finite element analysis, (2) Finite element software support, (3) Adv. strength of mat'l., (4) Classical mechanics, (5) Adv. mathematics, (6) Statistics and reliability (7) Computer systems and programming, (8) Fatigue analysis methods, (9) Fracture mechanics, (10) Test methods and analysis of data, (11) Manufacturing knowledge.
TYPE AND LENGTH OF EXPERIENCE
Five (5) years minimum of design, test and analysis using various of the mentioned knowledge requirements. Additionally, experience in heavy machinery product design preferred.
