Structural Impact/ Crash Analyst

ATK is seeking a structural impact/crash analyst to support multi-terrain impact testing and analysis of energy absorbing concepts for spacecraft and aircraft. The effort will be in support of NASA’s Subsonic Rotary Wing (SRW) Crashworthiness Program and the Orion Landing System Advanced Development Project at NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) in Hampton, Virginia.The candidate must be proficient in using LS-DYNA to predict the nonlinear transient response of structures to controlled and uncontrolled multi-terrain impact/landing events. Pre-/post-processing experience with either MSC.PATRAN or Hyperworks is required. The ideal candidate will have experience with modeling conventional and composite aircraft/spacecraft, soil/water/rigid impact surfaces, and compliant energy absorbing systems, such as airbags. The ideal candidate will also have experience with impact testing of energy absorbing structures and dynamic material characterization testing techniques, including familiarity with associated instrumentation and data acquisition equipment and data reduction techniques. Experience with human occupant modeling and testing using anthropomorphic test dummies is a plus. Familiarity with LabView, Matlab, MSC.DYTRAN, MSC.ADAMS, and/or MSC.WorkingModel is also beneficial. The candidate must have demonstrated oral and written communication skills, and must be capable of working interactively on a team. Experience in a research environment is preferred. A M.S. degree or higher (PhD preferred)in Mechanical engineering, Aerospace engineering or a related engineering discipline is required. Some travel will be required.
