System Engineer
GENERAL SUMMARY:
The System Engineer will assist and advise Iowa Lakes Electric in the areas of system planning, protection, operations, expansion and modification. In addition, this position may be made available for projects for other clients. Specific functions for Iowa Lakes Electric include, but not limited to the following areas.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Lead the implementation of projects that are recommended in the Cooperative’s construction work plan.
2. Keep the distribution model and GIS system up to date with either direct input or supervision of others.
3. Provide power quality assistance and be involved in leading issues relating to power quality. Provide recommendations regarding system protection and sectionalizing. Provide assistance in power quantity issues such as equipment loading.
4. Review system maintenance practices and provide assistance in analyzing improvements in that area. Some possible avenues would be performing a “worst performing circuit” analysis, or working with the distribution model to see what types of sectionalizing changes could be recommended to increase reliability.
5. Provide guidance in Automated Meter Reading (AMR) equipment and the data associated with it. Some examples may be developing a loss analysis or transformer sizing program with the AMR system.
6. Be the technical interface with the substation owners with respect to SCADA and other technical equipment in the substation. Lead the operation and maintenance of the Iowa Lakes SCADA system and its interface with the power supply SCADA, if any.
7. Prepare construction contracts, coordinate pre-bid meetings, evaluate bids/proposals, provide contract award recommendations, report benchmark metrics and closing out contracts and agreements for large distribution line construction projects.
8. Perform work order inspections of recent constructed distribution facilities to assure compliance with RUS, NESC, IEEE, ANSI and other applicable standards.
9. Other Operations and Engineering duties as assigned by Iowa Lakes Electric.
DIRECTION OF OTHERS
Coordinate planning, operations and engineering processes with Iowa Lakes liaison and PSE supervisor. This position may give direction to Iowa Lakes clerical and technical personnel upon approval of the Iowa Lakes liaison and direct supervisors of such personnel.
JOB CRITERIA
Education and Experience Knowledge typically acquired through five years of experience or more and a 4 year degree in Electrical Engineering. Individual must be capable of acquiring a professional engineer license as soon as he or she is eligible. Knowledge of electric utility systems, line design and associated programs is a plus. Working knowledge of computer software tools, especially Milsoft, MS Excel and MS Word. Key Competencies
Technical Competencies: Possess basic knowledge for computer applications and technical writing. Must be physically able to perform the essential functions of the job.
PSE Competencies: Possess ability to achieve quality results, be change-oriented, use effective communication skills, be customer-driven, foster innovation, be a continuous learner, and display teamwork behaviors.
Coaching Competencies: Possess ability to continually identify and recommend process and/or system improvements to facilitate efficiencies in line design.
Working Conditions
Normal office conditions. Some travel and overtime may be required.
